    Race course electronic speed traps

    Gentlemen,

Does anyone know if there are race courses or circuits anywhere in Thailand that have electronic speed traps that can measure speed down to at least 1/1000th of a second? Also need to be able to run the course in both directions.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Barty

Not sure that drag strips will let you run in both directions. Anyway do you know where the drag strips are or any other race courses?

Sorry nope they are nor designed for that are they. There are two but the one nearest you may not still be open, but maybe. The one that is definitely open is the one on Hwy 35 before Samut Songkhram. Keep driving towards Ratchaburi until the road kinks to the left for the Hwy police station where you do a U turn and go back about 1km it is on the left. 13.455086 100.083749

The one nearer you is or was in Klong Luang 14.124781 100.710767

Bira doesn't have a very long straight and the other one is nearer Hua Hin and is Kaeng Krachan.

Depends on how fast you will be going as to how long the straight is. Are you looking to measure speed or time?
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

Only looking to measure speed. I expect that it will be a little over 100 mph.

What about buying a special device for that.

If it is a M/bike Veypor would be the most cost effective but you'll need to glue a magnet to the wheel/brake disc. If a car it gets more expensive with V-Box being the instrument of choice. About $450.
V-box is GPS timed but more accurate than a smart phone or handheld unit . Veypour requires you to input the wheel circumference.

Kaeng Krachan Circuit 12.942246,99.706249 has the longest "straight" at about 870m if that is long enough.

^ and that's the reason I keep engaged with the board. I will probably never need any of that information, but its always an absolute source of wonder to me about the stuff people on here know.

Thanks for the leads VocalNeal. I already own a Racelogic PerformanceBox which I have used for various vehicles but it is not acceptable for what I am trying to achieve.

    The rules are;

Rules for Fastest XXX (deleted for the moment)

    1. The vehicle should move under its own power, and may not be towed.
    2. (Deleted for the moment)
    3. No bodywork or aerodynamic aids may be used.
    4. Even if items are not made by commercial/professional enterprises, reasonable standards of workmanship are required.
    5. The course must be accurately measured by a professional surveyor or by a similarly qualified individual.
    6. Confirmation of the speed must be given by the independent company.

    Also;

Rules for 'fastest speed achieved' records

    c. Speed must be measured using a ‘speed trap’ consisting of electronic timing lights placed at the start and finish of the course. Where possible, the record speed will be taken as the average of the fastest consecutive runs in opposite directions, and the runs must take place within an hour of each other.
    d. All timing equipment must be sourced from and operated by suitably qualified professionals, who must submit a statement after the event confirming the record speed and how it was measured.
    e. These instruments must be accurate to at least 1/1000th of a second.

I have elected to not give away exactly what vehicle I plan to build at this time, but will do once I have all of my ducks in a row. However I will say that the vehicle will be an unregistered type of 4 wheel buggy that will be powered most likely by a gen 2 Hayabusa engine. Should I go ahead with this I will probably do a Teak Door build thread on it.

Any thoughts from anyone on the above are most welcome.

OK so it is like Bonneville? I think the second direction will be the difficult part.

That being said a lot of small scale Thai mocyc drag racing is done on temporary courses so they must have a portable set up. If they will help and can set up in the opposite direction in under an hour? they'd only have to move the start system.

At least I know who to beg now if I want to borrow a V-Box to do some scooter runs.

No begging required. Just ask and figure out how to pick it up. I only have the cigarette type power plug so you’ll need to figure out how to power it up on a scooter.

This is the model that I have.

Is there sometimes a police speed trap there? I drove along there yesterday. Too much traffic to get any decent speed up.

Thanks for the help but I'm not sure that what I want to be doing should be done on public roads.

    Have you asked Ernie?

The two race courses in Bkk (which hardly ever, if ever, seem to be used) are both royally appointed and all that, so the chance of a wandering foreigner using it for their Honda Wave or electric milkfloat or whatever is pretty slim.

Somewhere like the Burriam Race Circuit seems like a much more possible suggestion.
    Cycling should be banned!!!

Why not an airport runway? RTAF bases are usually very quiet on the weekends, have a chat with the local commander.
EG: Korat RTAF has 3000m of runway. I'm guessing you'd want to do the timing events early morning when there's not much wind and [assuming naturally aspirated induction] the air is cooler. Korat is 220m above sea level though which will reduce the air density.

Try Highway 7 in Lat Krabang near the airport, they even send you a cool picture of your car complete with your speed, and for the bargain price of 500 Baht.

The old airport in Surin runs drag racing events .

    https://mobile.facebook.com/media/se...37&type=3&_rdr

Would be a cheap option as the strip is deserted most of the year.
