The only thing I could gather from those pics was that the designer is a very angry person.

thats a fine looking car, nice stance and heft.

tone down the chrome, rework the grille, lower the aussie/us macho quotient, give it a decent set of wheels and graft on a bit of classy british understatement especially around the C-pillar and it would make a nice jaguar.

    Ugly as fuk...

Repulsive rear end, 2 bob front end, pathetic interior. The frontal 3/4 shot looks fine, and that's about it...

The Holden is a badge engineered, mass produced car available in most countries, designed and distributed by the US parent company.
A bit like British Leyland in the 60's and 70's. Shit products in different disguises.
No style no class and as ugly as a wart on the Mona Lisa.
Betty was spot on. That car is monstrously fugly. Aussie icon my arse.

then perhaps you would like to give us an example of a current mass produced car that is not ugly.

I ws going to say the Alfa Giulietta but I'm not sure If it qualifies as mass produced. Mazda MX 5 is fine in a trolley dolly way and the new version is definitely spot on. Ummm, err, ahh, yes, the VW Scirrocco is fine and dandy. The Subaru BRZ is pretty nifty. Loads of examples really.

alfa sadly lost their moxie years ago.

car design these days is dictated by safety concerns and bean counters, true individuality of design is hard to find nowadays compared to say the 30's to the 50's, for me the real ages of automobile art.

ferrari and aston martin produce truly beautiful cars, although even aston martin now are reduced to blinging up existing cars is an attempt to attract buyers, but bling is what people seem to want.

porsche and the german design has become smug, bmws and mercedes now are positively ugly, they could be korean. the italians are mostly lost and the rest just copy whatever this weeks popular design features seem to be and graft it on to their latest model as a facelift, and the yanks havent designed a nice looking car since the early sixties.

the land rover defender is still the bees knees though.

its 60 years old, but still perfect.

Design for my four SWB Landrovers wasn't the deciding factor.
It was because they were initially designed to be a small tractor 555!

    A triumph of marketing.

How a crude, uncomfortable and thoroughly unreliable vehicle could even to this day still be vaunted as the zenith of off - road capability is a credit to the advertising boys and perhaps an enduring symbol of British gullibility. Actually, this little vignette of engineering hubris is a good metaphor for modern Britain in which many still cling to the notion that they are inherently superior to everyone else when in truth they are are nothing more than an anachronism jerking along on a dodgy gearbox and a dubious big end.

Clapped out but still living the dream. Love the way they came up with the name " Defender "; those boys sure earned their corn that day.

well, we certainly couldnt accuse you of being any of those things could we?

my comments on the land rover were regarding its appearance rather than its reliability or capabilities, and it is still the most capable of off roaders although it does may some reliablity issues, but due to their basic spec and contruction its mostly nothing that cant be put right by a quick wipe with an oily rag, try that on a computer controlled vehicle that has let you down.

the appearance of the defender is as perfect as can be for a utilitarian go anywhere four wheel drive vehicle, devoid as it is of any of the fripperies, curlicues, creases appendages and other stylistic extravagances that disfigure so many 4WD vehicles these days, offroaders that cant make up their mind if they are a sports car, a limousine or or family sedan.

perhaps you prefer this grotesque monstrosity ?

Well, in truth most serious off - roaders the world over choose Jap stuff because of their superior reliability and longevity but what the heck.

Anyway, as far as current automotive design fads go, yes, I wholeheartedly agree with you that current trends are dreadfully overwrought.

I still pine terribly for my old Saab 9- 3. Fucker nearly killed me several times but sitting in it and poodling up any decent carriageway was a joy in itself, and it looked so right.

Re the "Landy", they truly are the biggest piece of shit you could ever have the misfortune of being lumbered with if you need a serious 4WD to get to work and get you home again in the middle of nowhere. I've worked in highly remote and inhospitable terrain around the world for 30+ years, in that time we've tried out Landy's, Hummers, Nissans, Mercedes G-Wagons, Jeeps, Landcruisers, Mitsubishi's and some shitbox made in an Eastern Bloc country who's name eludes me. There's a very good reason that every oil and seismic company on the planet stick with Landcruisers, no matter what people who've never really been offroad (like Jeremy Clarkson ) might say. The final proof in the pudding is when you get into the absolute middle of nowhere and conditions are extreme, see what the locals are driving. I'm in such a place right now, the Bedouin all have Cruisers.

for non racetrack roads, at speeds up to 90mph, i would suggest this little gem might be a more efficient way to get around in
