Motoring in Thailand and Asia Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire?

Motor show kicks off today

The 22th Thailand International Motor Expo 2005 kicks off today with the debut of many new models and a dazzling display of technology and innovation provided by many car companies around the world.

Under the concept "Automotive Vehicles ... Challenge the Changing World", the Motor Expo at the 100,00-square metre Muang Thong Thani will run until Dec 12. It is touted as the largest auto exhibition in Southeast Asia.

The focal point of interest in the event will be a throng of new cars on display including the Audi A4, Brabus S-Class, Chevrolet Corvette and Optra State, Citroen C4, Ford 4-Trac and Focus, Hartge 650, Honda New Civic, Jaguar Xj6, Land Rover Sport, Mazda MX-5, Nissan Murano, Saab 9-3 Sport and Sport Combi, Ssangyong Kyron, Subaru Impreza and Forester, Volvo C70 and Wald Stepwagon.

Chinese-made motor vehicles, including motorcycles and one-tonne pickup trucks, will also be showcased.

Kwanchai Papatpong, chairman of Inter-Media Consultant Co, the organiser of the Motor Expo, estimates total car sales in the event this year would be at least 15,000 units.

Exhibitors this year include 30 car brands from eight countries and 300 car parts and accessories manufacturers.

But premium car manufacturers Mercedes Benz and BMW are absent from the car show this year, as well as Toyota Motor Thailand Co, the country's largest automobile company.

Toyota instead will participate indirectly through its dealers.

I've been a couple of times before, but the cars are pretty unimpressive. I guess that's why the totty is there.

I thought it was VIP only today and Joe public tomorrow so be careful if you make the trip down to the impact arena. I'll be there this evening.

Well you will be seeing the best looking of my female students. 11 have permission to miss from today through the 12th to be "Pretties" presenting the cars.

I advise all to go early, it is so crowded by 1pm you really cant move. Quite close to my house and a pocketfull of free tickets, may go early one day soon.
