    Trail/Off-Road Motorcycle

    Hi All,

We have plenty of threads re high powered road bikes or Scooters (wave etc.) but I cant find any regarding Trail Bikes.

Can anyone point me to the correct thread or does any one have any recommendations for a Trail bike which can be purchased/maintained in Thailand.

    Thanks

How much do you want to spend?
    How much use?
    How big?

    Cheapest option discussed here

kawasaki sell them here. I've been looking for a Honda crf . originally the crf450r but on looking into it I've decided on the enduro crf450x solely because with the enduro it comes road registered and will be easy to get myself insured . plus the electric start will help me get the fukker started when its hot. I think they still need importing though.
will not put up wiv the "Nanny state" so don't push it on me.

Do you want it to be road legal?

You can check out some of the threads I've started to see how the KLX holds up.

You can walk straight into Kawasaki here and buy the KX250 or KX450 MX bikes straight from the showroom if you like, not cheap though!

Yep, they have 2013 KX250F's in the Khon Kaen showroom, drove past today and could not believe my eyes. The combination of the Kawa being best in class, finance available for foreigners, main dealer parts available on my doorstep, I think my crf is going up for sale.

While I doubt it will be available in LOS, the CRF450 Rally looks bad-ass- I'm sure a standard CRF450 is around, though:

    Kawasaki d tracker?

One member here got a Klx and a set of motard wheels, best of both worlds.

That's actually not too terrible- it's $7600 (225K) in the States, so it's less than a 50% mark-up as opposed to a 100% mark-up for a lot of other bikes (though it still sucks).

^ It's so so bad if you get a grey import, fresh in the crate are available for 285K which is 25% mark up on USA prices.
285K is actually way better than the Uk msrp on 315K.
Not really fair to use US prices as a comparison as they are priced for the kind of sales volumes that wont be seen in Thailand for another 15-20 years.
I'm just glad that I can actually go to a local store and source a new dirtbike and have some main dealer parts back up. I've waited eight years for that.
The motorcycle market in Thailand really is opening up at an ever increasing pace, more choice and lower prices are on the horizon!

I think using the cost from the States is fair enough- the MSRP is the same, but Thailand's import taxes are what drives up the price- you could buy one brand-new in the US and ship it cheaply on a container, but you'll get reamed by customs.

Prices on a lot of new bikes went up in January due to higher tariffs- hopefully with bike production increasing in LOS we'll see a few cheaper domestically-produced models (and I'm still hopeful ASEAN agreements will someday have an effect).
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

It depends on what you are after when you say 'Trail, off road motorcycle'

The CRF250 and KLX250s etc are great however they are very high maintenance!

If you want something just for a bit of fun off roading and no jumping or really hardcore stuff then why not go for a CRF 250 L? I bought myself one a month ago and I'm really pleased with it!

No it's not fast at all but it's not ridiculously underpowered plus with an ECU and exhaust you'll free up around another 5hp ish which will make it alot more fun!

They're well built, fairly priced, easy to find bits (OE and aftermarket) Look good and are reliable!

A lot of people are moaning about the CRF 250 L without even ever riding one but as an owner I would recommend one unless you are really after a hardcore off road bike??

I am sure you dont own a klx250. The statement that they are high maintenance is rediculous!!!!!! My friends crf250l within one month and under 1500k has purchased 2 radiators front fork seals and cant keep the bike cool when riding it hard. I am not saying one is better but to say the honda is less maintenance is bullocks...just my thinking...

    Sorry for the confusion!

What I meant was full on motocross bikes like Kawasaki KXF, Honda CRF, Suzuki RM's etc etc... I didn't mean what it came across as, I.e. the Honda CRF 250 L is much more reliable than a KLX 250.

Regarding your friends CRF 250 L that doesn't sound too good! However I must admit that I've not had any of those problems on mine. So far so good to be honest!

I am forced to sit with the Thai school girls in the local internet cafe

    C'est la vie

Thank you all for your mouth watering suggestions but as Nigel says, "when I win the lottery". Does anyone have a suggestion for the equivalent of a Wave, but a little more substantial in terms of strength. This is for weekly use along very rugged farm tracks, stream crossings etc.

Something easy and inexpensive to acquire and to be maintained at the local village bike shop. There are few Ducati dealers around here chaps.

Thanks for some pointers, I will take a look at the Honda 250.

^ you don't want to look at the lifan? Only 46k, copy of an older XLR, mine is still going strong without issues.

Yamaha make a scooter that comes with dirt tires.
