U.S. ship transits Taiwan Strait after China flap
    Thu Nov 29, 2007 10:50pm EST

The USS Kitty Hawk and eight accompanying ships passed through the Taiwan Strait, seen as one of Asia's most dangerous flash points, on their way back to Japan after China barred the carrier group from entering the Hong Kong harbor for a long-planned visit, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii said.

US ship: Can we enter your port?

NZ: Do you have nuclear weapons onboard?

US ship: We can neither confirm nor deny.

    NZ: Australia's that way.

When the US announced that all surface ships no longer carried nuclear weapons they again asked to be let into port...

Law is that no vessel with nuclear weapons or nuclear powered can enter a NZ port.

Most administrations can be a bit petty minded, not just the Chinese although they seem to be the masters at it.
At the time the No nuke policy was announced in NZ, I ws travelling frequently between NZ and the West coast of the US, It seemed that most Air New Zealand flight when landing at LAX encountered a problem, either no parking slot so you were left parked away from the terminal for a long time or they needed to make a security check, which meant parking the aircraft out near the perimiter while all bags were unloaded and identified by each passenger before loading on the carts to be transported to the terminal.
It usually added about 3 hours onto the disembarking time.

New US frigate, military flight barred from Hong Kong: USPosted: 01 December 2007

WASHINGTON: China's decision to deny US access to Hong Kong was wider than first thought – it has also barred a missile cruiser from making a New Year's port call, Pentagon officials revealed on Friday.

The Pentagon this week formally protested Beijing's decision to block port visits last week by the Kitty Hawk battle group and two small minesweepers seeking refuge from a storm, in the worst diplomatic spat between the two countries for several years.

But a spokesman for the US Pacific Fleet, John Yoshishige, said China had also refused a request by the guided missile cruiser USS Reuben James to make a port call in Hong Kong over the New Year's holiday.

And a US military aircraft that flies to Hong Kong every three months to supply the US consulate has also been denied permission to land by the Chinese, said a US defence official, who asked not to be identified.

The disclosures came amid continuing confusion over what set off the flare-up in relations.

If a country like China lets a frail, peaceful old man like Mr Llama dictate its foreign policy, it has bigger problems than we know.

Akin to the US banning all Swedish and Norwegian products because Al Gore was awarded a Nobel Prize.
