What name do you give this war?

When discussing the current Iraq conflict, what should it be called? The "War On Terror" is a war on an abstract noun. Since terror has always been with us, this silly term describes nothing. "The Long War" was tried for a short while, but can the length of a war really be determined ahead of time? The "War on Islamic Extremism" is a little less silly, but there's empirical evidence (e.g. 'Dying To Win' by Robert Pape) that the majority of the guerillas have a turf war mindset that transcends religion. Sadam and his Baathists were a fairly secular bunch, for starters. Is there an objective way to name this war? The Second Gulf War is the best I could do, but it isn't even so accurate if Afganistan is included. What name do you give this war when you discuss it?

Actually, it would have to be the third Gulf War. The first was between Iraq and Iran that ended in 1988.

For starters: Western culture or Western civilization is a term used to refer to the cultures of the people of European origin and their descendants. It comprises the broad heritage of social norms, ethical values, traditional customs (such as religious beliefs) and specific artifacts and technologies as shared within the Westernsphere of influence. The term "Western" is often used in contrast to Asian, African, Native American or Arab nations.

I'd call it the 'We are all Making a lot of money war'. Since I think it can be demonstrated that most of is in the west are making a lot of money out of this war in one way or another.

Infact I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in the west who is not making money out of this war.

Yes, the world community should leave Israel/Palestine and US/Iraq to sort out their own mess and not expect others to take sides with the invaders and pick up the pieces.

You mean you have no investments that have shot up due to the war and its possitive impact on the ecconomy?

    Strange question - but no, I don't.
I am rather selective in my investment and avoid anything tied to military or other unethical businesses.

I doubt you are selective enough that at some level you are not benefitting from this war and 'The War on Terror' in general.

Not necessarily relating to you personally but here is an example:

In the aftermath of 9/11, the Madrid and London bombings, the UK government rushed through measures to remove the reliance upon Heathrow, seen as a single point of failure in the Nation's and indeed world air travel.

These moves included opening up regional hub airports and putting in place the services and management strategy to distribute air traffic in case of an attack in London. Similar moves have been carried out across Europe. - My parent's house, in the vacinity of one of these airports trippled in value in a matter of months.

The War on Terror has instigated huge movements of money and wealth.

Likewise the war in Iraq, the increased Oil Price, which we moan about and the increase in stock values of a huge range of companies, directly and idirectly, has jacked the stock market up, pushing up savings, and in particular pensions.

Of course in France, Germany and Russia, there has been a negative impact. These countries were happily conducting illegal trade with Iraq (while at the same time arguing that sanctions should be left in place, and policed by the US military )

That is a good buiness to be in, your illegal markets protected by someone else's army.

You'll remember of course that the poisonous gas attackes by Iraq on the Kurds back in the 80s was greatly facilitated by the German Chemical Engineering Company - Uhde GmbH - Since they provided the technolgy and built the plant that the chemicals were made in.

Yes Iraq was a lot better when it was the private market of the French, The Russians and the Germans.

Yes, but this is a very different statement from suggesting that everyone in the West is making money out of the Iraq war.

    Bullshit.
You conveniently leave out Brit and US interests, amongst others, in the 80s. Also, the trade sanctions were controversial and not fully supported in the nations mentioned.
