You can't make this up or can you?

Azeris jailed for 'insulting Islam'

A court in Azerbaijan has jailed two journalists for writing and printing a newspaper article that was critical of the Islamic religion and the Prophet Muhammad.

Samir Sadagatoglu, chief editor of the Senet weekly newspaper, was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday, while Rafik Tagi, a journalist at the paper, was given three years.

The court ruled that their article 'Europe and us' was insulting to Islam and Muslims for saying that European societies were more successful than Muslim ones because Christian teachings were based on peace and tolerance while Islamic values, based on the teachings and actions of Muhammad, were not.

"It was announced during sentencing that ... the article contained ideas charged with hatred for Islam and the Prophet Mohammad and these actions of the paper were directed towards inciting religious hatred and enmity," the court's spokesman said after the guilty verdict was announced.

The newspaper article provoked widespread anger in Azerbaijan, a secular but predominantly Shia Muslim country, and elsewhere in the region when it was first published on November 9, 2006.
Soon after the article appeared, an Iranian cleric - angered by its depiction of Islam as a violent religion - offered his house to anyone who killed the journalists, Reuters reported on Friday.

I couldn't find the Rueters news service blurb if it does exist we have one of those Dr. Strangelove moments: "Gentlemen! You can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

Yes largely made up, and part of the US/Zionist conspiracy to make Islam look bad.

Islam is a religion of peace, please!

Pity, and just as the West are warming up to Azerbaijan (and its oil).

Wonder if some academic is about to discover a corelation between oil and political/religious/judicial/social lunacy/extremism.

Coalition forces say they must reduce civilian deaths
An American commander in Afghanistan has said that he is "deeply ashamed" by the killings of 19 Afghan civilians by US Marines in early March.

He said that the military had paid condolence payments to the families in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

Western forces have been accused of carelessness over civilian lives when attacking the Taleban and their allies.

It has become a major issue, with Nato recently saying that its biggest error last year was killing civilians.

In January, it promised to do better.

'Honour stain'

"I stand before you today, deeply, deeply ashamed and terribly sorry that Americans have killed and wounded innocent Afghan people," US army spokesman Col John Nicholson told reporters in Washington by video conference from Afghanistan.

US 'erased Afghan footage'

"The deaths and wounding of innocent Afghans at the hands of Americans is a stain on our honour and on the memory of the many Americans who have died defending Afghanistan and the Afghan people.

"We made official apologies on the part of the US government and payments of about $2,000 for each death," he said, after US officials visited some of the families left bereaved by the incident.

US forces were accused of killing the civilians during shooting near the city of Jalalabad.

Journalists said at the time that US troops confiscated their photos and video footage of the aftermath of the violence.

The Americans said the fighting started when a convoy of Marines was attacked by a suicide bomber and came under co-ordinated small-arms fire.

Afghan men shout anti-American slogans after the killing of civilians.
Local accused US soldiers of targeting civilians in Nangarhar

They said that their soldiers returned fire, and acknowledged that at least eight Afghan civilians had been killed, with a further 35 injured.

Reports said that as they left the scene along a busy highway, the Americans fired indiscriminately on civilians and their vehicles.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned the incident at the time.

Criminal inquiry

Thousands of local people took to the streets shortly after the attack to protest against what happened.

The Associated Press news agency said it would complain to the US military after journalists said US soldiers allegedly deleted footage of the aftermath of the Nangarhar violence.

Freelance journalists working for the Associated Press said troops erased photos and video showing a vehicle in which three people were shot dead during the incident.

Civilian victim of Afghan violence
US-led forces say they kill fewer civilians than the Taleban

A US military commander determined that the Marines used excessive force and referred the case for possible criminal investigation.

Correspondents say that military killings of civilians have eroded Afghan support for international forces and have put the Western-backed government in Kabul under pressure.

On Thursday, Nato forces vowed to improve co-ordination with the Afghan authorities to avoid civilian deaths.

Their pledge follows the reported deaths of about 50 civilians last week in fighting in western Afghanistan between US-led troops and militants.

In recent days there have been protests by Afghans in different parts of the country - including Jalalabad - over civilian killings.

The bloodshed has returned to levels not seen since the fall of the Taleban in 2001, and a quarter of more than 4,000 people killed last year were believed to have been civilians.

Correspondents say fewer civilians are killed by international forces than in suicide and other attacks by the Taleban.

BF - if you stare at the OP long enough the lottery numbers will come to you or you will eventually see how some of us are naturally funny people like the Iranian Iman fellow. Do you think the Aljzeera reporter has a sense of humor or did the story just naturally fall in place like that?

The BBC articles are tragic. If the Iraq area is the cradle of civilaztion and all, how come the people don't know better than to dileberately kill women and children? BF, any plans to read this book: The Long Road Home: A Story of War and Family? It might help you to identify with what our troops go through. It tells of how a platoon leader had to finally give the order to fire at Iraqis who had children in front of them as they fired and advanced on his pinned down troops. The leader said eventually it was shoot or be overrun. Can you imagine that? In a fight to the death and they wouldn't fire on their killers because of the kids. And then he finally gave the order. Terrible. He also described how the children would retrieve weapons and deliver ammunition but his men didn't fire on them. Can you imagine that? In a death match and yet he relinquishes advantage to his killers because he would risk death to maintain his and his troops sense of what is decent.

Did you know US troops aren't allowed to enter mosques? Where do you think people go to pick up their weapons when they go out and kill?

A while back had one of those not so moderate imam thingies say that a mosque is Allah's home, in the context of being ok if not compulsory to conspire or store instruments of jihad and associated terror on those premises.

By and large, there seems to be a negative correlation between religious extremism and the affluence of a society.
For example Iraq WAS secular, when it enjoyed the highest standard of living and education in the Arab world. Women wore mini skirts to university, and 47% of the Doctors were women. Turkey now has the highest standard of living in the Arab world, and is secular.

While reading an article which began with Farfur the Mouse (he hosted the children's game show Tomorrow's Pioneers, broadcast on Hamas's Al-Aksa TV for palestinian television) at the bottom of page one I read this paragraph:

"Speaking to an Arab affairs expert on the reports that Islamic Jihad is threatening to send scores of women suicide bombers to blow themselves up near IDF troops if Israel starts an operation on the ground in Gaza, she enquired what awaited such women in heaven, the equivalent of the notorious 72 virgins ready to serve the male shahids. The answer: dwarves who will serve them. Even in jihadi heaven the women are discriminated against, it seems."

There you have it. Now we know.

The nutters know who they are so there's no need to further embarass by naming them, but isn't it odd that on the one hand they'll demand links and proof for comments made against Islam or Muslims or in favour of civilisation, and then scrutinise and contest and if necessary simply reject whatever is inconvenient to their cause, and yet wholeheartedly believe in absurdities such as the 72 virgins whose pulchritude will be replenished at will?

I suppose I should now expect further degenerate filth in my email box from Macha and other cocksuckers of all...uh, you know who...is it only them, or do all muslims of their intellectual stature concede loss of credibility by taking refuge in the depraved?

...and what awaits Muslim Jihadist dwarves in 'heaven'?

Seriously, it's impossibly to take any kind of 'faith' seriously -- not only is it incredibly stupid, but apparently attracts mostly stupid people

That was the case until the U.S. intentionally screwed it up. The last thing the U.S. wants is a non-friendly government controlling some large source of oil. Our worst fears are a democratic government whose people actually benefit from the oil supply.
