is that tongue-in-cheek or is that for real?

don't want to make an ass of myself when I slip down there for a few days...

oops..sorry...read it on the forum...thought it was - ouch - true -ouch please stop hitting me with that bed pan!
nah Klongy, no bed pan for ya.. this time I know you've been here a while but the longer you live here the more ya learn how to take care of yer pud.. these ho joints are all over the place even in TH..we honkeys jez cant spot them and usually stumble on to them by accident or bcoz a local points them out.

For ex. a while back, a week or so ago, on buffalo phils channel, some fool was asking how Rompo Mansion was (its a big condo near the Lotus and Carrefour on Rama4 behind Emporium) I lived there for few years and it took me a long while to discover they had a big ho house in house. Why? Coz it was stuck on the mezzanine floor and the lift din't stop thar.

One day, due to a power outage, I had to take the stairs up and lo'n'behold what do I see?.. wall to wall numbered puzzy behind a huge glassplate one way mirror window. Ya ordered ya dish by number, could comsume it there or could do a take-away to your room.. The place was classed as a "200 Baht massage parlour" ya paid the ho-house 200 B fee, the bonk was to negotiated with the broad, no barfine, no fuss no muss.

Overall the place is a bit of a shitehole in my opinion - it's good to see different places though I reckon.
I thought that as well. It got better the longer I stayed there, but it's still a shithole.
again its the same story, the FNG doesn't know what is out there. I thought, when 1st time off the plane, that Bkk wasa shithole, now I wouldn't live anywhere else.. and for me, Penang would be one of the places to live if things went pearshaped in the LoS.. but I've also been there so many times and made a few local friend.. def Chulia street and Komptar ain't on my list as regular places to hangout at

    On Chulia street .

It's more of a Mexican section in a local/backpacker restaurant that does a few Mexican dishes - it's cheap and cheerful but great for me as I've just been eating Thai food/ Mcdonalds for the last 6 months.

ok, I'm not so lazy as to take a taxi for a 300metre walk - I've been round there and yes, it seems as if you are in India.
I've never actually been to India but did used to live in Coventry which is probably the same if a little cooler.

Anyway my highlight of today will hopefully be getting my passport back with visa - might check a beach out though but the one you mentioned (I think it was you) doesn't sound so great if you cannae swim.

no worries , I thought most of the TD members had probably already done a Penang visa run so I was a bit light on the details.

I did a non-B there last year and it is a shithole with not much to do. However found a good bar in George Town called stardust bar and the guy who owns it, Kelvin I think is a decent enough guy. A book shop across the road sorted out my non-B and I paid 20 MR ontop of the 200MR for the non-B. They even booked me an AirAsia flight back to BKK for 1800baht - good geezas they were and Indian. True, lots of katoey hanging around though.

I spent some time in Penang a few years ago (twice). I thought it was a great place, lots of things to see, some very interesting. Any guide book will tell you where the various temples are. There is a snake temple (full of snakes!), the oldest Chinese temple in SE Asia, nice place. Lots of ancient houses, lots of really good food. Chinese markets and old houses still being lived in. Old Muslim mosques. Altogether a good place to wander around.
I came across a Chinese opera going on in the street one night. And the Thaipusam festival there is also fantastic.

The beach is nothing special although there are some monster boulders that are very photogenic on one. I stayed in one of the hotels once, it was nice enough.
    I have reported your post

So here are some piccies of Penang from last January:

    Here's the Chinese temple:

And a look inside. My camera was messing up here, thus the overexposure. Still, you get the idea.

Here's the view from atop Penang Hill. Takes about 1/2 hour to get up here, all the food and drinks are way overpriced, but the view is pretty good.

Georgetown. No idea what that thing is in the middle, but you can see the colonial influence in this part of town.

    More of the colonial stuff:

And if you've got nothing else to do, Penang has great shopping - loads of pirated dvds in here, too, along with a movie theater, and everything else.

Batu Ferringhi. As beaches go, this one is pretty shite. Can't even swim in it because of the jellyfish.

yes, I take back my earlier comment of Penang being a shitehole - it's quite interesting for a few days - every little street has something new to look at (wouldn't want to stay much longer though).

Went to Fort Cornwallis today - the old British colonial fort - there were even a couple of horses there - one was friendly the other not.

Back to Bangkok madness tomorrow - have a nice bottle of whisky awaiting me.

You can, but I never have. It's a bit better than the shithole that's awaiting you at Pattaya, but as beaches go in Thailand, there are ones that are miles better.
