The first time I went to Brunei, in 2000, I had a chance to work at the Canadian High Commission for about three weeks. It was really boring work, sitting at a desk and just doing a few reports.

The local and Chinese Malaysian girls were always going to the market and bringing me food. They were so sweet. The only negative is that I had to register with the Canadian gov't which meant I had to pay taxes even though I was only there for a few weeks.

@RawOne - no problem, we're cool. Welcome to TD.
Though I'm not really an old-timer here; just joined this year.
@Jofrey - crispy pata is great, but I don't eat much of it. Not good for the health, or the figure.
@Natalie - was it the Canadian High Commission? We saw the flag, and assumed that it was an embassy.

Ok, on with some pics. My net is slow now, so prolly won't be posting much.
It's taking ages for the pics to load on photobucket.

More street shots. Good to see that Citibank is well represented.

Before we reached the mall, there's a local bank

Upon entering Yayasan Mall, you'll see some souvenir shops.

    Another street shot

We entered the mall and went to the food court. It was at the 3/F, I think.
Here are views from the window while we were waiting for our food to be prepared.
You can see the mosque in the distance.

I think I'll end here tonight. My net is &*(^# again. More pics when net is good.

^ Thanks KW. I'll finish this thread... eventually. It's busy times at work these days, and sometimes (or usually) my net is slow at home.

More pics. These are still views from the food court. The small lake is part of the mosque compound.

Parking lot - this is to the right of the pic in the previous post.

    Lunch for the day

Girl-friend had these - steamed chicken in some kind of sauce

I had Char Kway Teow (Malaysian or Penang-style noodles)

    Guy-friend had Laksa + rice

We all felt a bit more posh, so we ordered drinks. In KK, since we were budgeting, we drank water all the time. In Brunei, we were toward the end of our trip and we found that we still had $ to buy drinks. Mine was milk tea with jelly, guy-friend's dessert was called ABC.

After lunch, we headed out for more exploration. This is still part of the mall, from the outside.

Yayasan Mall is composed of two buildings. Between the buildings, there's an open area. On one side, you can see the mosque.

On another view, you can see the river.

I found the women to be more stylish in Brunei than in KK - their clothes were nicer. Maybe because they're richer? Anyway, here's a woman in baju kurong and heels.

Here are some women headed for the mall, maybe on lunch break. Non-muslims also wear the baju kurong but without the "tudong" (their term for the headgear).

Btw, at Yayasan Mall, there's a Jollibee. It's the Filipino version of McDonald's.

Meanwhile, back to some river views. These were taken near that Jap resto.

More views from near the river & Jap resto. It rained a bit so we had to seek shelter for a while.

The back of the art gallery. It had some exhibits that we wanted to explore.

    Walking towards the art gallery.

That's all for now, got some weekend stuff to do. Until next time...

Thanks for bringing back memories of my times there. Yes, the women there are very fashionable and they're really into their shoes!

What I loved about the place and I am comparing it to the Middle East. The women loved their clothes and shoes. The fabrics are exquisite. Colourful. The 'tutongs' are beautiful.

Lovely, lovely thread, also brings back memories.

    TGIF!

Anyway, to continue with the pics and the story, here's the art gallery up close.

The exhibit was in the makeshift building at the back. It was about the Nature Festival.

    Pic of a pic

There was an art contest for kids too. They had to draw/copy the photograph at the top right.

For this one, the original is at the bottom right.

While viewing the exhibits, we were invited to stay and listen to the talk of a visiting scientist from the UK.

It was an interesting talk and a pleasant way to spend an hour in airconditioned goodness
