Yep- the 'broad brush' is in full effect around here- the fact is that I know way more guys (by percentage) that have been royally screwed by their American wives than their Thai wives, so stay away from American women (actually, that last bit of advice is worth heeding...)

The house problem is easily sorted with a 30 year lease, as he is 62 at present that gives him till 92, at that stage I don't think he will really care.

That depends on a lot of things. I bought two houses for my wife, and told her they are 'hers' whatever happens to 'us'. The rental income safely exceeds our humble Isaan lifestyle, leaving my offshore money untouched and accumulating long term. We've even rented a small apartment in Ubon as a pied a' terre. I could get nowhere near equivalent yields from property elsewhere, unless I wanted to chance it as a slumlord. Neither do I need to bother about fluctuating exchange rates, as my domestic income is covered in baht.

we were thinking of selling our old wooden house in CM city, but the main tenant expressed an interst in a long let

so we gave him a 3 year lease; that gives us a very good return on the house price and we have no hassle

I never put myself in that position Dr. But I have observed many who have.

A good friend (and fool) inherited $50,000 and built his HO a house with every penny. House rich, cash poor. Once he had no cash he was useless the Thai family and you know what happens then, the family is not as friendly when you are skint. Lost everything within 3 years.

I have made the same rant with friends who smoke, or who do not put any savings away for the future. They don't listen either. Most people do not appreciate long term risks.

Best of luck to you, Rick.
It definitely seems like you have done some serious homework prior to your relocation.

But allow me to ask you this, why on earth did you decide on having another child at your age and in Thailand?
Notwithstanding the fact that you already have 3, who are grown ups by now.

My decision was based on a few things-

    1. It is nice to keep my money liquid rather than tie it to a house I can never own and one that would be hard to sell. I have seen houses sit for years with for sale signs on them.

    2. Neighborhoods change and neighbors come and go. I have rented 3 places and enjoyed short lived peace and quiet. The quiet neighbors moved and some loud idiots moved in bringing with hordes of barking dogs, loud music and alcohol fueled parties. The once clean neighborhood relaxed its "rules" and the whole village went down the toilet. I have seen 3 villages go from being quaint and pristine to having dirty streets, deteriorating houses, lax security and soi dogs running a muck. I was glad I rented so I could pick up and move.

    3. I too looked at Mexico at one time. it is possible that the Thais will also kill the goose that lays golden eggs just like the Mexicans did. They will continue to cheat us and crime against foreigners could sky rocket. I could easily abandoned a rented house an move to Laos or another county close by.

    4. I want an clean exit strategy and a house seems to put kinks in that.

    Just my 2 baht!
Although RC's retirement thread, I agree 100% as written above. Although #2 is a big driver, # 4 is HUGE on my list. I mean even if I was to decide to marry(not on radar), but if I did I want to know we can pack camp and move. I am not willing to Thai up 3 or 4 million baht under the premise "Oh Well I will just let it go". Renting is simple and extremely affordable.

But as noted, each of us has our plans and some feel they are better off buying or want to offer security to their wife. I think they are better off with liquidity then a house but what do I know.

Many a man has come to Thailand and fallen into the trap. It is easy to do. I have read about it for years. I have personally met 2 guys(older Fellas) in the last 2 years that have done just that and have had to toss in the towel and now are left with little and might have to pack back home. I am in no way saying that all Thai women are like this. I think there are a lot of relationships that work out like they had planned but probably far more that did not, sadly. Its a painful lesson.

Older guys huh? I'm sure they married into their age group and social status, or did they marry young uneducated whores? Probably makes a big difference, most people in their home country would not marry a whore, why would they do it here? Because they appear so sweet and helpfull?

    DD,
I did not want to reference specifics or judge the 2 gals. Nor did I want to judge the 2 guys. To each his own. But I will say that neither were the "Whores" you mentioned from what I can tell. Both are up north girls as they told me. Both of these guys went similar paths after they got hooked up. One had met online and the other was a waitress at her parents restaurant.

First guy is 58, His wife is 26 IIRC. It lasted about 2+ years but in that 2+ years he paid a pretty good Sinsot, bought a house, upgraded parents house, bought a car etc. According to his side of the story she basically lost interest in him. He said he quickly became an outcast. Again his side of the story. Never met his Wife

The other fella is 54 and his GF is 24. He only went as deep as building a house on the parents land and did some property enhancements for the parents then she started to want more and more and threw fits when she did not get what she wanted and cried to her parents according to him. Again only his side of the story. They have a 2 year old but he said he does not feel comfortable around the house. He said they are talking Thai around him and not translating etc.

I have not talked to the 1st guy in awhile, no idea what has transpired since. The other fella and I chat via email every week or so. He is going to call it and move back to Colorado I believe and just walk away.

But to your point DD I suspect that there are many variables that create the bad decisions some men make. I question anybody here in TL that would move fast into their relationship and start buying away as it sets the precedent going forward . IMHO you have to let that lust wear off so you can see clearly and make rationale decisions.

an unfortunate use of the verb

there are lots of stories like those, sad and predictable too. Getting one side of any break-up does not really let you know the truth

when you get both sides then often you realise the guy was a bastard, a bore or a whoremonger and contributed little to making the marriage a success

of course there are cases where the woman was just out to scam the guy, but I don't think that is the majority, or even a big minority
    I have reported your post

^Exactly, which is why I referenced it in both incidents. It was only their side.
