    Sending personal effects to Thailand

Need to send a medium sized box of personal effects to Thailand,(Bangkok),
Have had a reasonable quote from Courier company in the UK "Parcel machine" via DHL but they are unclear if it will just be delivered like sending stuff in the UK.
Can anyone let me know if it will just get delivered or will it end up in a Customs shed with outstretched hands wanting tea money?
Have been advised to send it to a Thai named recipient,
    Many thanks for any help/advice.

If they are unclear then likely it's only to the port and you will have to pick up. I sent four boxes with sevenseas and it was door to door great service too. I sent in Thai name and they had to go to the port to clear, no payment asked. If only sending stuff back was as easy! You only need to go to the port if sent by sea I guess, if DHL look on their website.

I used Seven Seas, cost me £300 for shipping the boxes. Six boxes.

Kept me informed all the way, and the door to door service is great.

No tea money paid out, I used copies of my O Visa, and Passport Picture page, placed in the envelope provided along with an inventory in each box.

I like to moan when things are bad but seven seas even rang to ask if it was OK to pick up the boxes 30 mins early. I sent four boxes and had a statue crated up and sent for about 300 as well, insurance included. I'd like to find a service as good and as cheap going back.

I got stung for a box of personal items. Mainly clothes, but I also had my PS2 game consul and about 40 original games. In the end they asked for about 20,000 baht import tax/duty. We settled on 7,500, so it seems they can charge what they like!

I used Seven Seas before when I lived in Bangkok and always found them to be extremely reliable. Never a problem.

ok, although this was posted some 4 years ago! i thought i would just recap/follow-up and say "DO NOT USE DHL",
Ohh' Yes was picked up and arrived in bkk within i think 12 hours, quite amazing, never the less, the box contained two high end speakers at a value in the uk of about £900, on going to DHL's warehouse near Bang pei to collect them i sent the gf in to do the haggling, she returned about 40 minutes later empty handed saying i needed to pay about 15,000 baht and that if i didn't want to pay they (DHL) would send them back to blighty etc, as i don't talk hardly any Thai what else could i do? i couldn't grease anyone's palms so had to give in and so had to pay the 15k, i don't think the gf tried very hard re the negotiating, even now she hasn't a clue with these kind of issue's,

£300 tax on £1800 speakers? Not really over the top.

I think it was 300 tax on a pair of speakers with 900 pounds value - high IMO.

I read it as 900 each, but I could be wrong there. But even then, 30%? Normal, for SE Asia and could have been much higher. (eg: Sailing boats attracted 175% tax when I lived there.)

Be aware that FedEx, for instance, can only act as customs agent for packages up to 40,000 baht in value. Above that it has to go to customs. Does DHL have a similar limit?

Clothes will attract more duty than other stuff.

I had to pay B12 when a book was sent to me in Bangkok; the postguy came to my office and gave me the slip demanding payment.

I needed to go to the main post office miles away to get it, cost over B120 in taxis, and time

Just reading the beginning of this and seeing DHL, my mind was screaming 'don't go down this road as they are famous for stiffing everyone at this end'.

Sure enough, that's what happened. DHL are pirates with a clear licence to rob us! The Thais say the same thing about DHL!

I had personal stuff delivered from Canada to the school I work at in Thailand, with no issues. The box was roughly a 1.5 foot cube weighing 5 kilos.

I sent a box and a Howard gem rotavator, My advise is send it in the name of a Thai person, less bother and have that Thai person get it cleared at the docks.

Had a set of engineering reference books sent to a business. Upon arrival the import duty was around $300 USD. Didn't pick up the package. A month later, second notice, the import duty had "dropped" to $100.

I guess books age quickly in Thailand.
