Are there advantages to marry a thai woman

Are there any advantages to marrying a thai woman. Is it easier to get a retirement visa? Can i open a business with her here easily? I am trying to get a rerirement visa here and want to know if marrying a thai woman is a good idea? Also i would like to work here. Is it easier to get a work visa here when married or not?

I am sure this has been hashed over before.
    Legally are there any advantages?
    Thanks

Why would you want to marry in order to stay in Thailand?

When I opened your thread I just realized I am legally a single man!

I really love my Thai wife and we have a whole house of kids to enjoy but up until this point of our relationship we have only had the big family buddhist wedding ceremony and I have paid the sinsot.

Really, and according to the laws of the land it was not worth us getting legally married here before but maybe I should formally tie the knot soon and sign some papers.

I suppose there are benefits but as of today I am not aware of any unless it was the fact they were going tp kick me out of the country.

If you get a retirement visa then you are not allowed to work.

If you wish to get a work permit here then forget the retirement route

That's how we are....whole Buddhist ceremony and trimmings, no legal papers. After 12 years....happy and comfortable as clams

I just did the reverse, only signing the papers a few years back and a private party, no buddhist wedding ceremony and no sinsot.
I see some advantages in that, it is cheaper (reduces a bit the income tax also)...

And another reason I did it is that I want her to get my nationality, which she can get after 5 years of marriage.
Nothing against the Thai nationality, which she can keep anyway, but having a European one can't hurt...

We were married at Amphur when we registered it, no Buda ceremony, no sin sod, she had house and land and a good job and a pickup.
We love each other so I do not know if that is an advantage or not, sure not because of being married, but she would have went without, but she was raised on the land she owns, is related to damn near everyone in the village and had a 21 years old son and an 11 year old daughter and I just thought it was better to be married.
makes no difference on a retirement visa as it was easier to get than a married one, I can see no real advantage to being married except that we want to be married.

Ferget marrying a Thai woman to get any special legal privlidges.

Bottom line: Thailand is a place to retire to - working there...not so good.

You can get a work permit if you are on a marriage visa but not on a retirement visa.

then you don't need to a marry a Thai to start a business or get a work permit to stay in Thailand.. See the 'Treaty of Amity' regarding permitted American businesses which is open to many options with a few exceptions and file papers to begin one and you can have 100% ownership like any Thai and be allowed to have a work permit with it..

Register for Treaty of Amity -- U.S. Commercial Service Thailand

As well if you already have a business back in the states you can get visas (non Immigrant "O" for example) based on that and just open an offshore branch here..

Marry someone because you're in love and want them to share your life with you..

Yes there CAN be advantages to marrying a Thai Lady as long as she is not working in the Sex Trade. Most of them are a dead loss. Not all. I said MOST.
Also ideally you should love each other.....
Remember when you marry a Thai lady you marry her bluddy family. They will bleed you dry if you are stupid enough to let them.
It happens all the time... YES IT DOES!
If she has a good education and job and her folks have a few Bht that will be less likely to occur.
Also she will probably have a kid or two with some lazy Thai Git who does nothing to support HIS children. You will be expected to do that fella. I refuse to do that.
If she speaks English you will at least be able to communicate vocally. Or you will have to learn Thai.
I married one. Fortunately I had a prenuptial agreement so when we divorced she got zilch!
All the best to you Pal.

As noted above by other informed TD'ers, no marriage necessary for retirement extension to non-immigrant visa and not difficult at all to acquire if you have stosh in the bank or a monthly pension. Can't not legally work with retirement extension. Nice to have a local companion that you can grow to trust and love that can assist through the daily toils of life and the gauntlet of translation. Nice for loved one to be able to acquire same nationality in the event you ever want to go back to your country or travel to other countries as it can sometime be difficult for a young lady to get travel papers.

Yes, My wife, her 1 brother and 1 of 2 sisters is collage educated and my wife and her sister are both English teachers in Thai schools and the brother and 1 sister are farmers and work all the time with money in the bank.
I have offered money and the mother refuses to accept and and I had to argue with them for me to pay my share of the fathers funeral costs.

It was no problem to get a retirement extension to my NON O visa and have had no problems ever getting my new extension,

That is very true, in fact I am kinda hard of hearing and have a time with the tonal aspects of the language and know a lot of words and was really trying to learn it, but I try to speak it and the tonal sounds fine to me but Thai can not understand a word I say, so I says Fuck It, and I never even try anymore and I just point and speak English and get along better off by looking for something and getting it bought by myself than with my wife.
And like I said, she is an educated lady with a good job, and a nice family, and she or they have never asked me for a satang and in fact have offered to lend me money if I needed it to buy something I have my eye on.
My wife and I have 2 joint savings bank accounts, and she has her own credit cards and I have mine and we are joint on 2 credit card accounts.
No difference in being married here except my wife seems to enjoy doing things for me and will not ever let me put my lily whites in a dish pan, god bless her.

My advantages of being married were made it straight forward to get my daughter a British passport and my wife a visa to the UK (actually that wasn't easy), but fok getting married if your sole reason is to stay in Thailand, no point and the criteria for a marriage visa is foked up anyway if you are under 50.
