Oh, your in town. We're about 16 kms from town, still very rustic and countryfied. Going on 12 years in February. Before I came to settle here, I resided in Sukhothai and Phitsanulok for some 8 years. We've about 300 rai that we work the hell out of. I've a literary, educational, and culinary background that I supplement to my disposal. Yet still, a very laid-back country way that we have suits me just fine. A side note about available land - as I read other posters here discuss rubber and palm oil spreads, we're thinking of starting with a substantial grove of oil palms....realizing that it's takes a fews years for these buggers to bear fruit and therefore productive. I presume you're with the mrs. and little ones in Surin? By the way, are you familiar with the Farang author, Thai Girl ?? Lives in Surin...but where? Take care....

It is normal they cannot read English well the even have problems to read the Thai language

Excuse me and by the way, I am familiar with the author of "Thai Girl" as I am that same.

I live out past Sangkha, but then you'd know that if you'd read "My Thai Girl and I". Arpels in Surin has it in stock.

So close to Big C! Huh! We had insects in kee lek soup tonight.

At least this time it cost me nothing.

    You're not missing much.

Incidentally, I read David Young's new book last night (No Problem Girl) and was very pleasantly surprised. I've read most of his books and found them to be a bit shallow in the past and too reliant upon 'witty' dialogue, but his latest book is really well written.

    idiot savant

We've a Thai gentlemen in our community {1 village over} that could be considered pretty average for the surroundings. You know the type: pleasant fellow, kinda nondiscript, picks up manual/field labor around the district, spends a inordinate amount of his leisure at a couple respective wats helping out here and there...this one is about 44 years {?}. Anyway, some time back he stops in to visit. I'm deeply involved in a book of historical content regarding the Boxer Rebellion. I than learn, to my astonishment, that he can "read" the text. 'Really'?, I ponder to myself. As we continue to talk, I find that his pronounciation of what he is seeing and reading {English} is spot-on!! Doesn't have a clue to what he is reading. No comprehension nor understanding of the words that he is reading. Obviously, he doesn't know the spoken word. Where do these people come from? This gent, pronouncing the romanized phonetics of what he sees on the page, but is completely lost in understanding what he is reading. How does one "learn" how to read {?} and pronounciate the language without comprehension. I find later that he is self-taught. But even in a self-taught or informal or formal setting, one would eventually understand what one is reading, yes?
