Where would you choose to live?

I work part time, Monday to Wednesday, in a Sukhumvit Office, for 70k baht, and currently rent a 55m apartment near the Emporium for 18k. But
I'm really piss bored of living in the farang ghetto. I need to get out.

Option 1) Rent a house in Jomtien / Hua Hin for around 12k to spend Wednesday night to Sunday night living in, and a studio somewhere around Ari for 5k for Monday to Wednesday. Commute into the city once per week by coach/van.

Option 2) Rent a large condo or small house on the outskirts of Bangkok, ie Sukapiban, Minburi, Rangsit, for 15k, and commute into the office 3 times per week by van.

Having been born and raised by the sea in England, I miss it a lot, hence option one appeals. But having a split life appeals less so.

Sounds great! I've only been to the main bit of Pattaya. I stayed in one of those purple coloured budget hotels for 400 baht in 2002 (room on the 6th floor and no ferging lift)

Where's the best place to find some web pics of Jomtien DD?

Cheers DD, I may be on my way soon. Have you ever been to Hua Hin? How does it compare to there? One of my other requirements is top notch local countryside, rolling hills and open roads to play on my CBR150 at would be good.

    top notch local countryside
I really haven't seen any of that in Thailand, maybe it is the amount of plastic bags I see on the roadsides that put me off.

Hua Hin I have spent 2 days there and that was more than 10 years ago, I found it very bland and boring entertainment wise.

I'm looking for somewhere with an ok beach, some open countryside, and not too "nana-ish" or "Phuket-ish", ie a prefabricated shitehold full of fat old Germans walking around in shorts and sandals.

I guess I'm looking for a farang friendly town (ie with things to do for farangs) but with a Thai feel to it. That is where Hua Hin beats Pattaya hands down. I'm just curious as to whether Jomtien is more like HH or Pattaya. Is there any history there? Or does it exist only for farangs?

I think most people would take Hua Hin over Jomtien anyday. The traffic is nowhere near as bad.
And if you want rolling hills and open roads they're 5 minutes out of the town.
Nice 1 hour trip to a waterfall from Hua Hin.

Thats what I figured (I dug out my ferging well used 2001 Lonely Planet). There is a national park just up the road from HH (although do I have to pay 200 baht to get in? I went to Wat Phra Kaew on Sunday and the silly bitch said I had to pay the full price, 250 baht, even though I spoke damn good Thai with her and had my WP and 2 Thai driving licences in my hand. She said Thai ID ONLY!). Its a shame that it's an hour further away than Jomtien.

I'm gonna head down to Jomtien this weekend to have a look. Actually the go karting track sounds good (if its still there, its listed in my Lonely Planet) as do the water sports (not much of that in HH, just a banana thing)

DD, what's the best way to get to Jomtien? Bus from Ekemai or are there vans?

A friend of a friend runs one of the two kite-boarding businesses on Hau Hin beach.
Wat Phra Kaew is a tourist gold mine I wouldn't expect any discounts there.
When we went to the waterfall the missus told the ticket dude that my mate and I both worked in Thailand and we got in for free!

Thats good news. I was told that the driving licences should get discounts, but the first attempt flopped.

I didn't see watersports at HH. I spent most of my time on the beach near the sofitel and horses etc. If there is, thats great. I'm gonna head down there next week to compare with Jomtien.

Hua Hin is starting to get very built up with new estates popping up like mushrooms. Not a problem if you aren't planning to make it a permanent home but there is less and less 'Thainess ' about every year. Not sure about the German population but there are plenty of Danes there for some reason.

It might be because 'Hua Hin' is Danish for 'Free beer and pussy'

    A wind up eh?

    Somebody's asked a realistic question.
The answers are all informative and factual.

An innocent bystander walking past wouldn't see anything out of order here!!

"Hey Pooly, what's an innocent bystander doing walking? Isn't he supposed to be standing??"

    Fuck off Maa!!
