A British diplomat returning from the tsunami in Thailand verbally and physically abused passengers on the flight home after going on a drinking binge, a court was told yesterday.
Col Peter Roberts, 51, the defence attaché to Thailand, behaved in a "disgusting and derogatory way" charging up and down the aisle of the aircraft swearing at fellow travellers and threatening to kill anyone who tried to restrain him, the jury was told.
Col Peter RobertsHe made disparaging remarks about the Thai king and the Buddha and said North Koreans were untrustworthy, it was said.
But when confronted he said: "Do you know who I am? I'm the head of the British Government in Thailand and you are treating me like this."
Even when his behaviour became so wayward and abusive that the crew was forced to handcuff him in his seat, he continued to hit out and swear for about an hour until the aircraft landed and he was arrested by police.
Isleworth Crown Court in west London was told that Roberts was travelling to London from Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, last February to give a presentation on the tsunami when he became drunk and abusive.
He was alleged to have consumed two to three bottles of wine, three whiskies and some port during the seven-hour flight. Passengers and crew told the jury that he became steadily more abusive and drunk until he was completely out of control for the last two hours of the trip.
Kevin McGuire, who was sitting next to him, said to begin with he was extremely pleasant and nice but was drinking heavily. "For lunch he had a couple of bottles of wine, some port and some whisky but continued to be totally pleasant.
"But he became affected by the alcohol. He was worried he may have said something unfortunate to the African woman nearby and he talked about North Korea and said they were untrustworthy.
"He began to rock back and forwards and was crying. He went to sleep but then he went to the crew area where he was told to sit down. He then got up again and went to the rear of the plane and was upsetting passengers. We got him to sit down. He was saying 'f***' this and 'f***' that."
Another passenger told the court that Roberts had been abusive to his wife. He said: "He was whispering in my wife's ear. He asked my wife out for dinner. Every other word was 'f***'.
"He was threatening to kill anyone who approached him."
Anil Mohun Kumar, who sat a few rows away from Roberts, said he was a danger to other passengers. "It was disgusting and derogatory and extremely abusive," he said. "He was totally wild.
"I believe that he had been drinking a lot of alcohol and was drunk. He said, 'F*** this country, f*** the king and f*** the Buddha.' I think he was referring to Thailand.
"He made several threats to the people trying to restrain him. I think he was a danger to the people on the plane."
When Roberts, of Passfield, Hants, started kicking and hitting out at passengers, Captain Idris Hansen-Bin-Noh gave permission for him to be restrained. A group of crew and passengers put plastic ties on his wrists and ankles and held him down for the rest of the journey. But Roberts continued to issue a torrent of abuse.
Cellie Fernandez, a tour manager, said: "He was shouting and swearing. Do you know who I am? I am head of the British Government in Thailand and you are treating me like this."
When the aircraft landed at Heathrow Roberts was arrested and taken to the police station. He continued to shout and swear and kicked an officer, the court was told.
Gareth Rees, QC, prosecuting, said Roberts, who denies drunkenness on an aircraft, said he had been taking the medication Seroxat at the time of the incident, an anti-depressive that is not supposed to be taken with alcohol.
But he claimed that the defendant knew that this was the case and later admitted to police that he had no excuse for the drunkenness.
The case continues.
