    Using credit cards without PIN

Lately, I have attempted to make purchases with my Mastercard, but they would only accept a PIN, no signing as before. THis is frustrating because my Mastercard does not have a PIN. Are there any grocery stores, etc. that still do business without a PIN?

Wouldn't it just be easier to get / activate a PIN? You could make use of whatever's accepted then.

I tried to make a purchase here in Indonesia with my debit card but the system would not accept a PIN. They said no problem next time you can simply sign.

I used a MasterCard a couple of days ago at a Big C in Lamphun. They had me sign a receipt.

On the subject of PIN numbers. My Bangkok Bank card was eaten by an ATM the first time I tried to use it because I forgot my PIN. Went to the bank to get a replacement and they had me key in a SIX digit number. Hell, I couldn’t remember only four after 10 months. I’ve been hoping a signature would always be accepted!

Never heard of a 6 digit PIN but wouldn't trust the robbers, so when opening an account key in 1234(56) for your PIN then change it later at an atm.

Nor do I. Sign reciept. Often confusion about PIN vs Code. Code is used for online purchases.

All Bangkok Bank ATM cards issued over the last two or three years require 6 digit PINs. When getting a new card the very last numbers one should choose, even just initially, are 123456.

Apart from those points you are absolutely spot on as ever.

^^He is talking about credit cards not debit cards.

Both of my Bangkok Bank credit cards have no pin and are sign only.

I have been asked a few times before to enter the pin into the credit card reader. When given that option, just press the green Enter button and the receipt will pop out to sign.

So when you withdraw money from an ATM with them, where do you sign?

My Bangkok Bank credit cards have six digit PINs too, but can also be used with just a signature so that's what I do if given the note to sign. Using with a PIN is much more secure of course, but in Thailand 'sign only' still seems to reign.

It's really silly to enter '123456' as a PIN in any circumstance.

I didn't know that about just pressing the 'Enter' button. Never needed it, but still good to know.

Recently, I had another case: By a phone purchase in a shop abroad in Europe they asked me for my MC details by phone. Since quite trustful shop, I gave it and the amount was really deducted without the bank (in Thailand) involvement of sending a confirmation code by SMS to my mobile as by all online purchases (e.g. airlines). The shop confirmed me that they always delete all the data afterwards.

    Anybody a similar case?

Care to explain why 123456 (or any other number) should not be used, considering you will be changing it at an atm within minutes? Are your bank staff so hungry that they might empty your account after handing you your card?

I don't use them to withdraw cash but thinking about it, yes I do have a 4 figure pin for one, but I think that is solely for withdrawing from ATM.

I had to get a new debit card from Kasikorn like you six digit pin was required, tried to use it at a petrol station their debit reader was not updated and would only take the four digit cards. Lucky I had enough cash to pay.

Anyone hear of the hack that allows you to enter your PIN backwards and still draw cash while alerting the authorities that you're under duress?

There was something about it in I think the Telegraph a few years ago, then heard nothing more so could be a myth.

^Why not? You're fully guaranteed to get it back, unlike with a debit card
