I find it difficult to understand why you would leave a 200k job to teach in Thailand for say 50k!
Is China that bad?
It'll be five years and it is just time to move on from China.....this question has a very long answer, but specifically I've gotten sick this past year which is probably from the pollution/weather, so I need a warmer climate and a place I like.
I don't know 100% if I'll be moving to Bangkok, but I am just asking about cost of living to do research which I always do before possibly moving somewhere.
50k a month in Bangkok? I wouldn't like that unless you owned your own gaff as after rent and bills excluding food probably not going to be surviving on much over 1k baht a day. Although if a hermit and not into going out I suppose doable but can't imagine much fun but as always each to their own. 50k baht a month up in the sticks would give you a good life though.
Asked and answered. Costs about 60k per month to live comfortably.
Do teachers in Bangkok not get free accomodation?
The local schools here in the sticks all have teachers houses. I do believe they are shared though. Two share a three bedroom plus one large room downstairs.
Not really the way many people want to live in bkk.
Ain't we all?
If I told you what I make would you hold it against me. I figure because I'm not a school teacher nor in Thailand my two bits worth has no bearing. I do know a couple in Laos that have positions in a similar position to mine and he makes about 1000usd per month and she gets about 500. Believe it or not I think this puts them in the upper middle class. I'll have a look at the glass door website and compare that to Bangkok wages for a true comparison. This couple has a nice home ect. Funny that even my BIL has a nice home in Laos built two years ago for 40k us.
I can say that the cost of copper to wire our farmhouse was similar to what I'd pay at home however the electrician only wanted 200usd to wire the place back in 2010. That was for two men and a week or two of daily work.
I did see his house on my last visit and flipped him 300 bucks to pour concrete in an area that still had a dirt floor.
Lesson being it pays to be honest. He then offered to paint our farmhouse. Cool guy and nice family. He'll be my go to guy for future electrical work ect. I gave him the wiggy and electrical ohm meter I had brought over as a Christmas gift as well. I'm cool like that I seppo.
It'll do sterling as well.
And no one has pointed to the hidden costs yet.
Just be aware that, behind the brand names and plate glass facades, there are things that would put most sentient beings off in the capital of the land of smirks.
A long term military government that will brook zero criticism.
Behind that modern facade is an underbelly of poverty, crime and corruption that finds its way into all strands of city life.
Many teachers who work in international schools get a housing allowance, but not all of them may have this perk. Language schools and public schools don't usually give housing in the package. Unlike places like South Korea and China where housing is pretty much always included. That is why I've been asking about rent prices. Cheers
Yes.. I think I get you here. I worry more about dealing with the cultural mindset of the Thais. Places I've worked like China and South Korea have a high educational standard and push their children to learn. The push to learn English is very high in these countries by the parents who even send their kids to school after school to learn more things.
