    Thai's and Flip flops

You know they have seen shoes. You know that they can protect your feet....LOL..

So I have been home now for 2 + months and have been busy doing all sorts of stuff. Yesterday my wife wanted to move these two 3" thick 1.5 Meter sq cement lids that have been sitting over by my shop. Pa couldn't lift them as they weigh a lot. So I said sure, no problem. She wanted them over by the kitchen to use as an pad for the Thai BBQ pit.

So my wife and Fil wear Flip flops all the time unless in bed...(well I can speak for my wife. ). Firstly my FIl thought we were going to flip the lid over and over some 30 yds like a big tire or something. Anyway I got the hand truck and we went out to lift them up. I squatted down and lifted one up and my Fil was trying to help and he stepped underneath where the lid had been sitting and there were 2 big Scorpions and one stung him in the big toe. He started dancing around doing the Ho Chi Minh 2 step yelling "Jeb". My wife ran over and said Its Ok, they are not that poisonous they just hurt for a few days. I said "Why wont he wear shoes when doing heavy work etc"...I said you know the Chinese have seen the Spoon and the Fork and they still fight those chop sticks..LOL". My wife laughed

We got the first one moved to the area she wanted and went back to get the other one. As we were setting the 2nd one the edge caught her small toe and she screamed as it scratched it pretty good and she also did the Ho Chi Minh 2 step dancing around blaming me for the pain. I looked at both of them and pointed at my shoes and said...."If you wear shoes these things don't happen".

I have a general rule, Flip flops are for leisure not for digging holes, ridding scooters or motorcycles, lifting cement, using a weed whacker with a stainless steel blade etc. . Just the other day the neighbor damn near tore his foot off as his scooter slipped on some sand and he stuck out his foot to stop from falling nd you guessed it, flip flops on and road rash was in order. I saw him yesterday with it all bandaged up.

When I was building my house here, I used to cringe every day when the guys would be climbing all over with flip-flops on.

    I must be part native.

Shoes on the Plane ... Actually, I dress well for the plane, smart Casual at least.

    Then ...

Unless I'm going into a BIG City, it's flip flops everywhere, for everything, for me.

I know I going somewhere slightly posh when my Partner washes my Flip Flops before we leave

They are said a fond farewell at the Front Door and the Temple Door.

    True Story.

I get the quick comfort and all but when you are working around heavy stuff, weed whacking, riding a motor cycle, etc etc. shoes just makes good sense. Plus I laugh. I watch my FIL and wife use a puny lil Thai shovel to dig holes and it all by hand and no leverage. I break out my TrueTemper spade shovel and I can dig holes in a few minutes and cleaner. But you can't dig holes with Flip Flops using a Spade type shovel.

I will stick with shoes when I work and Flip Flops when I am done and sipping a drink in the Sala

The only time I don't wear them is when I'm on a motorbike.

    Or barefoot in the house.

Which is more than I wear underkaks.

Underkaks and shoes, in this climate, foooook that.

I noticed that the first day I was in Thailand. ^ they don't step left and right foot. They drag the flip flops.
Like a leg chain in Thai prison.

Don't wear flip-flops; I think they are god-awful things to have on your feet. Good strong walking shoes or boots for me.

When I retired to Thailand, I promised myself t-shirts, short pants and flip flops would be my uniform. Very rarely do I wear long pants, a dress shirt or socks.

I'm like you, I wear flip flops maybe 10% of the time. I always have on my Tennis shoes or Boots. Depends on what I am doing.

What do you call a French man in flipflops?

    Philippe Flop.

I should correct myself, I wear kinda sandals, not rubber flip flops that still flex down to the ground when you lift yer foot.

Well here I am far more comfy in socks and tennis shoes. But then again I also like my Levi's and T shirts. I am hotter with shorts on and flip flops are out of the question. I mean I guess if all one did was bag women, drink and cook maybe Flip Flops work..

I usually wear boots when in the farm or in the jungle. Flip flips are comfy so I wear them all the time when I'm home.

I did LuLu. My apologies. That is definitely flip flop activity...

Even when I am internetting its usually indoors so it's bare feet and a cocktail.

I will say. Flip flops are part of life here. But if you are an active person and actually leave your place and do something other then shuffle on down to the local 7/11 or Tesco for Leo or boxed wine you find that riding a mountain bike, motorcycle, hiking. Jogging fishing along a weed infested river, pouring cement, welding etc require shoes.

But its all good. I watched my FIL get stung by a Scorpion. My wife get a toe rashed up good, neighbor with a tore up foot.

One thing Thais are great at is finding multiple uses for one standard item.

Treat the mother in law to dinner and a new pair of shoes in one J.

See and thats the difference..My feet do not sweat up and stink. Even my wife thinks its odd.

My standard attire ^. Was even sipping that Grey Goose with those top flight Cons on and my feet are clean, no dirt under and road funk under the nails, no cracked heals and tore up toenails...
