Anyone ever have a pet turtle?

Luigietta overheard me saying I wanna get a pet turtle, and now won't bladdy forget it.

Would need to be one of those inside in a fish tank kinda ones, and not the outside in the garden kinda ones. Think we can get through to the Lao maid that it's not food, the Cambodian gardeners that speak in clicks and squeals though, I'm not so sure.


What do the little fookers eat?

How to deck out their fish tank? water, rocks, plants, sun-lounger?

Temp wise? 16 degrees aircon for 10 hours a day followed by 14 hours of fookin' 4,783 degree Celsius okay?

Can be bought from most large vegetable markets at the mo due to draining of the rice paddies.

Malayan Snail-eating Turtle

I used to keep them as pets, but had to give them up coz they stink which is usually what happens when you forget to clean them/their environment.

The Brave Flippers cook them for food though.....

I had a bunch in a small outdoor fish pond, but the fish with which they coexisted kept croaking. So they got tossed. Too bad, as the kids used to enjoy betting on turtle races.

I found one of those Malayan snail eating turtles but released it after reading that they are covered in bacteria that can really make you sick. Think of your kids first Luigi.

My wife had one for some months. She found it in the soi. She said it was lucky, but maybe not for the turtle? She (the turtle) lived under the stairs behind the water pump.
Eventually taken to a suitable Wat in Ayudhaya and released.

NB. Never release into a Bangkok klongs as they cannot get out of most of them!

If kept indoors in a tank they do smell and carry salmonella. They are like puppies cute when young but some grow quite big.

No that is Galapagos and they are tortoises. But as big as a dinner plate.

Wise choice. My kids "had" one. Their interest lasted about 1 week. After which feeding it and cleaning its stinking foetid water passed to others....

Get a tortoise. Easy. No stinky water to manage. Water and lettuce. I have 4 Sulcata Tortoises.

Size matters when choosing a pet.

Tortoises are much easier to have as pets. Especially here with warm weather and lots of free vegetation.
