    Chiang Mai plod

    Fckn hell.
The old bill up here are 20 times worse than in BKK.
The level of shaking down tourists on bikes is an utter piss take.
Set up next to the bike hire places where tourists are allowed to rent using foreign licenses and then fining them 400bt for not having an international license.
Scam complete with scum farang at the end of the phone line to explain.
    Dirty robbing scum.
And the farang involved are the lowest of the low.
BKK police are top blokes compared to the utter cvnts up here.
It's amazing that Prayuth allows the extortion of tourists on such a blatant scale up here. They bring a vast amount of the income here via tourism, and the pigs are then allowed to rob them blind.
    Discraceful.

    Rant over.
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.

The eyes are useless when the mind is blind.

Its easy enough Al. Just ride round a few cones and over a plank of wood.
Sit through an hour subtitled safety video do a peripheral vision test then a colour blindness test then a 50 question theory test of which you have to get 45 right.

    Oh and you need
    Cert of residence
    Application form
    2 photos
Passport with non imm visa copy
    Medical certificate

Maybe it is a bit more work than I stated and you will probably do it over 2 days. They can make you do 5 hours training too if they dont like you.

Can you get a Thai DL on tourist visa? No you have to have a residence. It is a a scam but easy to combat. Was going on 30 years ago. Shop owners unite, go to the province governors house or office and complain. It has worked since the 1980's. Even the coppers know its short term. Business must go on.

They've been running that one for two months at the same spot.

Talk about money for old rope.

Don't you need a license to ride a motorbike in your country?

Hoping Loy Toy will pay a visit one day, with his Aussie license that he reckons is valid indefinitely in Thailand.

It's illegal to ride a motorbike without the proper licence, Albert. An IDP is a legal requirement if you're using a foreign driving license and the fine for not having one is B500. Not only are you breaking the law but you have the fucking temerity to whine about it when you get caught. Do you think being a farang gives you special privileges?

Felangs do not need a Thai DL, an International DL will suffice

Yet there are still so many people who will dispute these simple truths, and also deny that their insurance is invalidated by...err...not being licensed.

There surely must be far more than the apocryphal 'one born every minute'.

If you're on a Non B or O the IDP is only valid for three months from first entry. Get a Thai license.

How dare they insist on or even ask for a license, it's an unbearable humiliation!

Driving should be a white privilege, those undereducated chickenheads should never have been let anywhere near a steering wheel.

An International Driving Permit (there's no such thing as an International Driving Licence) can only be used with your own DL. An IDP on its own is useless. Anyway, as the White Man's Burden said in his OP he didn't have an IDP.

^ What are you blethering about? It's a Thai word so the way it's spelt in Latin script depends on what transcription system you use.

There is only one official system and that is the Royal Thai General System of Transcription. To use any other system would be treasonous. According to the Royal Thai General System of Transcription and all who sail in her the proper transcription of ฝรั่ง is "farang". According to the Thaksin-supporting republican Finland-plot linked Google Translate the proper pronunciation is "F̄rạ̀ng". I know which one สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าดิศวรกุมาร กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ (that comes up with some peculiar results in the online translation engines!) would use and if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me!
