I was asked for advice on this today but didn't get far. It hasn't been discussed in detail on the forum for several years as far as I'm aware.

I was asked why in 2017 the focus of starting a marriage is placed on money, and why if this is so it's not simply sufficient to show a bank statement.

As far as I'm concerned this tradition should be consigned to the history of previous centuries, and any expectation for a physical display and handing over of wealth by a non-Thai in this day and age is shallow inconsiderate and obscene.

My friend has neither. He was however invited out to meet his gfs family last night, 5 of them, who scoffed down a mountain of food then presented him with the bill.

Such a blatant display of expectation would put me straight off. His gf said they were testing him. Yeah to see if he's a mug.

You should probably be careful in the company of any and all Thais.

If they get a whiff of your language prowess, superstar associations, etc. I'm sure quite a few bills and requests for "loans" would be made.

I nailed this one night to win a karaoke competition in Silom.

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOTHING like Smeg's level of stardom.
I can only sing a dozen or so Thai songs. He's in the 100s.
