I did after 4yrs of blaming myself for the Death of my GF in a car crash and hitting rock bottom with depression drink and drugs.

I still smoking ganja and have a beer every so often,though now do all in moderation,and I'm still aware if i have one two many beers I'll drink until i reach oblivion.

Difference is now I have the power to say enough is enough.

What if your own 'power' isn't enough to overcome addiction and you need to tap into something stronger, clown?

Actually, a lot of addiction traits are about connecting to something beyond the ordinary, beyond the self.

For this reason I don't even bother any more. If I have two 'social' beers my brain wants to continue until oblivion, because it's used to that.

I've been to every oblivious place booze can take me so any new drinking sessions wouldn't offer me anything new, fun or adventurous.

higher power bullshit

It is a bit gay but the idea isn't really "god" or "higher power" its more like "anything but yourself" as in clearly if a person is seeking out AA/NA then "them self" isn't enough to keep them from drinking. You dont have to be an everyday drinker to be an alcoholic either. Problem drinking and going overboard alot and fucking shit up is the same thing, even with long periods of dry spells inbetween fucking up.

Probably started out with "god" way back when that stuff in everyone's lives, but morphed into something even the staunchest atheist or anti religion person can swallow.

Higher power can be a tree stump or your dog or some shit. Can be the AA/NA group itself. Anything.

AA/NA isnt JUST about NOT drinking - its also about helping people be a "better person" and there are a shit load that probably need help in that department too.

Its not all bad, but it is a bit cultish on the surface.
