    Places to live in Bangkok

After perusing the answers to where to live in Thailand (other than Nakhon Sawan) and as it will be necessary to be in Bangkok a little longer than planned, I was interested in where TDorians think the best places to live in Bangkok itself are. Keep in mind access to shopping, some decent bars, local food and entertainment, preferably within walking distance condo or house, relatively close to some form of Rail as I dislike driving in Bangkok. My apologies if this has been done before. Also preferably where the rent is not poisonously expensive.

All sorts of shopping, resturants and nightlife. Quiet uni sort of living. Access to central Bangok via water taxi or airport rail.

If you're near a sky train and/or BTS link it hardly makes any difference anymore.

    Take your pick.

It does if you go out downtown a lot and want to stay out past 23:30.

Soi 10 Sukhumvit is a gem within easy walking distance of most things you might need and mercifully free of any scummy street dross selling their shit. It is simply a soi in which there are a few hotels and a good choice of condos from which one can rent in a reasonable price range i.e 25,000 - 40,000, and is also a street where seriously rich Thai folk live in their landed houses. There are no shops, no bars, no hawkers, no vendors, no beggars and very few if any soi dogs. It also has Chuwit's park adjacent but that is currently closed for alleged refurbishment but I suspect he may well develop it into condos or a hotel.

Ir one hankers for a venue further away from mainstream tourist Bkk but still within its proximity then my personal favourite is Aree. Essentially, it has a reputation as the district attracting the media/advertising/ creative bright youngish Thai as well as the more established Thai middle classes.

Going to the river and the areas adjacent to it up in Nonthaburi is nice but a bugger to commute to and from anywhere else in downtown Bkk, although the extension of the BTS from Morchit will make things a little better.

Silom is to be avoided unless you are queer or an antipodean with a big moustache who gets off on them.

Hi, its certainly good to walk around there..not many street vendors..which in turn, creates a reasonable sidewalk..plus not many motorbikes constantly zooming along the walk..
Have been noticing a lot of Karaoke places, coffee, resto's and numerous hotels......
I live in Ratchathewi...getting harder to walk in peace everyday..
Time to change Postcodes...better quality of life..

Except that at most times of the day it is crowded like Tokyo. I try to avoid it, like the plague. Don't even get me going on Siam station which is/was under designed and a major choke point.

That being said there are many places on Soi 7, 11,13 et al . IF you don't consider yourself special and are prepared to live like mortals.

The bugbear is that the BTS shuts at midnight so puts a damper on evening fun as one then has to deal with the taxis.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

What's the point living in the farang ghetto at all? Thonburi is nicer and cheaper.

The worst farang ghetto I've ever seen was Soi khao talo in Pattaya about 10yrs ago.

It must be an even bigger shitehole now

All the Western lower class, ex-blue collar worker, alcoholic dossers are simply getting older and mercifully are not being replaced. Certainly, the British lumpen demographic is shrinking annually as they return to their dotage in Blighty. It happens to most expats/retirees/ refugees at some point.

Even Tax, as I understand it, is preparing to quit his palliative care home in Hua Hin for the delights of Keighley so no one is immune, it seems.

    Tempus fugit.

The Russians, Indians, Chinese, Iranian, Turkish and ASEAN folk are the demographic now. In ten years or so I doubt very much one will find any British/Cod Irish style pubs in Pattaya to speak of.

I was in the Sportsman t'other week having a late breakfast and I reckon the average age of the punters present, all British, was around the 55-65 range.

    Quite depressing really.

Yup- the traffic on that soi rivals Bangkok now.

HC- if you want a decent answer, ask a decent question.
You don't want to pay 'too much'. Neither does anyone. But what is your budget range?
Are you working there- is there a commute you need to do? This is highly relevant to where you might choose to live in Bangkok.
Existential questions like why on earth you would want to live there are not for this thread

Don't be so fucking stupid. The traffic on Soi Khaotaolo is fucking nothing in comparison to the jams up at Laksi, Asoke, Vipvawadee or by Rachaprasong in rush hour, you hyperbolic twat. Christ, on a Friday night between 1700 2100 hrs the traffic in Sukhumvit from Soi 1 up to 77 is scarcely moving, you exaggerating titwillow twathead.

^^ I repeat- the traffic on that soi rivals Bangkok now. Especially when there is the market on. Cherry picking the worst parts of Bangkok hardly adds to your dwindling credibility. I have known, and lived in, Pattaya way longer ago than you.

in spite of her love and appreciation of life in a civilised country, mrs t. is not ready yet for cutting off ties permanently, and i dont really blame her. she has family here and intensely dislikes the gloom and darkness of the winter months in the uk.

dividing our time between the two countries is proving to be a good decision.
we have all the benefits of being uk residents, and i am not forced to exist as some kind of a stateless second class citizen in a third world country where my permission to reside depends on the whim of some bemedalled drone sitting behind a desk in an immigration office as he examines my bank book and the stack of photocopies i have provided him with yet again.

6 months in the uk is a welcome respite from the idiocy, the lack of opportunity, the double standards and the sheer drudgery that life in thailand for a more or less teetotal retiree who doesnt suffer fools gladly had become although life in my palliative care home which consists of a beach side ( front row of course) condo with a 25 metre infinity pool, gymnasium, sauna and an army of flunkeys to greet and salute goes a long way in compensating for the chaos, filth and madness encountered once one leaves the compound.

as uk residents we qualify for free healthcare, which is about to become as good as inaccessible for those without a uk address and gp registration (and before the naysayers complain about the nhs, my wife went to our gp asking about a mole that has recently changed shape and she was being examined and given the all clear by a consultant dermatologist within 4 days, earlier in the year i had complained to my gp about abdominal discomfort and within a week i was being spitroasted by a combined gastroscopy / endoscopy at harrogate hospital. the service was every hit as good as at bumrungrad and the professionalism of the quacks, nurses and desk staff was second to none. again, i was given an all clear.)

re awakening our status as uk residents and spending half our time there after 10 years as non residents will prove to be a good move for a myriad of reasons, not least the ability to regularly engage with people on an equal level in a common language. the food, the service. the facilities, the professionalism, the sense of responsibility, the competition on the high street, the value and choice and the efficiency of almost everything puts thailand in the shade.

thailand is i'm afraid a bit of a joke, enjoyable as a temporary bolthole, hut its not the real world, its a mickey mouse backwater that like most of its inhabitants, cant be taken too seriously.

of course street life in the uk cant compare with that of thailand, but the clean air and comfortable climate, at least from april to october, and the superb countryside with its ease of accessibility more than make up for the deficiencies of city streets.

god bless the uk, in or out of the eu, its the finest fucking country on the planet.

Yes well I'm afraid I must agree with silly old Tax this time and it hurts like fok to admit it.

But hey, the silly old fart is onto something at fookin last.

It is true that the farang scum who live in this shit hole but flounce home a few times a year are the happiest.

Best of both worlds innit, fok off for a while and associate with proper people for a while then flounce back to Thailand and be amounst the retards again.

I love it, onya Tax, ya coont.
