Why auto ain't your missus capable of being taught how to change gear? Thais just put manuals in 3rd gear and leave it there. Lot cheaper than an buying auto and gets one from A2B just the same.

Hmmm, the missus is currently back there, and she is violent so he'd better take care!

Just negotiating with the missus on spending some more money in Thailand. I'm gonna spend 300,000-500,000 extending the property to enlarge the main bedroom, create a nice large kitchen, sort out a proper double car port and maybe a nice gazebo and nicer outdoor space (good call Roobarb) - all that, will be hers (I might sometimes live there/holiday there) or something. But, I will look around for a condo, just a cheapo for a million baht or so, in somewhere like Cha-am or Chantaburi or wherever (I will search around to see where I like - preferable within a reasonable driving distance from the house and on or close to a beach), that will be 100% in my name, and 100% mine. The car has been transferred into the wife's name, as is our comfortable little house (which has work I can do closeby, easy work and a 40,000 salary; not great, but once all my basses are set it'll mean I'm not using me savings to live month to month), so I'll be condo and motorbiking... If I do go back and live in Thailand fulltime then we'll have a nice weekend place (mine!) aswellas our house. If I decide, at anytime, to leave or just live elsewhere, then I can rent out the condo or sell it and get all the money for me...

Along with other savings (not much now, but building up by about $7,000 each year I'm working in Korea) and pension, I should have something if it all goes pearshaped.

MadFreddy, this is the kinda situation you wanna get yeeself into - you need an out that doesn't leave you homeless and potless; you may wanna work a couple more years in Yankland to set it all up.

Thanks Bettyboo and roobarb. Those houses are close to the size I would need. I do have a lot of things to bring, and I was thinking a house like those with another building like a garage sized one with high ceilings might do the trick. When I come to Thailand this week, I'll be throwing ideas at my builder to see what it might cost. I might get away with less than I think.

Fred - as others have suggested, ask around in the village a bit and see if there is someone locally who can give you a price to build. Show pictures of what you want and they should be able to give you a labour plus materials price.

Don't necessarily stick with your English builder. Not saying he's a bad guy or won't do a great job, but there are a lot of farangs in Thailand who, like you will be doing, are looking for a way to make ends meet, and will be looking at relieving you of US$ 10K or so above his costs keep him in food and beer for a while at your expense.

If you keep the house simple then there's more opportunity for you and your wife to project manage the build instead of bringing in a professional. The build is happening in your in-law's back garden after all.

There's a lot you can learn from reading the TD building threads. I learnt all I know about construction from TD before embarking on my build, which is probably why my place turned out as haphazardly as it did. But the thing is, and I've said it earlier, in Isaan a house is really just a roof over your head at night so it doesn't matter too much how it turns out.

I just want to get the best I can afford. And I want the house to be like I want it, and I've heard some things about using locals, who build the way they think it should be built and not what you wanted. I'd like the house to have an american touch so I'll be comfortable living there.

Do what a lot do and erect a flag pole. You can then fly the flag. Fred I'm a little lost as you claim you have a daughter in Thailand. Yet in other posts your g/f hasn't pushed one out yet.

This is fine if you are spending $100,000+ - you cannot, CANNOT, expect that from a $30,000 build - and the extra 'Western style' bits and pieces you'll get by paying $50,000 just aren't worth it here in Thailand. The Thais are fukin stupid and fukin irritating, but, as per the low cost threads like mine, it looks shite, they look like they don't know what they're doing, but just leave them to it and it'll end up ok because they're used to making little houses that are suitable for Thailand (rather than Texas or New York). Just sayin...

Yep, most sensible thing to do.
It's actually a semi-automatic which is standard here - meaning no clutch and you punch the gears by foot.
It's what my missus got, who can't cope with a clutch, just like yours, Fred.

No shit. I was thinking about popping out this weekend to go slaughter some endangered species somewhere, but the wife had the jet and the kids needed the chopper. Oh well......

Davis, he's from Texas. You have to make allowances.

Shooting at random stuff is a fundamental self-sustaining requirement for any Texan in the same way that breathing might be for you or me.

Added to that you have the issue that your average Texan sees anywhere that is not Texas only as a vaguely understood concept, loosely defined as 'The Rest of the World', which contains little of interest other than it could offer a larger variety of things to shoot at.

Prag, Where do you get the idea I don't have a pot to piss in? I have a house here in Texas, have worked jobs my whole life, none of which have hurt this planet any, and I'm proud of the fact that I raised my 4 kids mostly by myself, as I will be a parent to this one we're expecting. All I'm trying to do is make the best of what I do have, which is using the funds from the sale of this house to build the best one I can there, with as many things an american house has as possible.Davis, my hobbies are my business as well. I wouldn't shoot any endangered specie for any reason, in fact, the money I and others spend for hunting licenses go towards habitat restoration for all species, not just the ones I hunt, but that's another subject for those that aren't ignorant to the fact that hunting is a necessity for those species that are legally hunted. Do you actually know where meat comes from? I eat what I hunt, not just for a trophy to show a beautiful animal off. Stroller- that's also one that I could use, as she is used to either automatics or semis. Prag, I have a step daughter in Thailand, who I call my daughter. Betty, in any event, I will be there next week, talking with the builder about total costs, and see if and what I can get for what I can afford. Used to living in a certain size house here, and since I have a lot of things I want to bring with me, I'll need enough room for them when I move there. Just need some I don't want to live without, air con, hot shower, american toilets etc. Roobarb, I'm not from Texas, I moved here from New Jersey in 1985, and hunted long before I moved here. And trust me, geography is a major interest in my life, so I know quite a bit about a lot of different countries. My bucket list includes seeing most of Europe for the history that came from there, and Africa not only to hunt, but to see things there that are only there and no where else.

Leaving Sunday wasabi, staying two weeks, enjoying Songkran while I'm there. Stroller, like everyone else that is married in Thailand and has a house, I'm building it for myself, my wife and our child. Yes, she will get the house when I die, which is my plan.

So now you have a step daughter. How many more of your wifes kids haven't you declared? Is a 2 bedroom house going to be big enough?

    Fredwiggy, it's really easy.

    Step 1: Arrive in Thailand
Step 2: Travel to your 'home' in Thailand.
Step 3: Enquire at local shops as to prices of their second hand scooters.
    Step 4: Buy a scooter.

I'm sure you can provide the overwhelming evidence that can back up such a claim.

"Most Thais"/"greater percentage of Thais", etc....

Our respective experiences and exposure might differ and vary greatly.
