grocery store earnings in village in chiang mai

I have a friend living in a village in chiang mai with very few farang. She told me that on an average day she gets 10k baht in net takings (Not profit) from her grocery store. Is this even possible? It seems like a huge amount. And apparently she is only required to pay 300 baht in taxes per year.

Does this sound true to any of you?

Possible. Depends on village size and competition. Small village can do 2k to 3k sales per day.

Pays only on profit claimed. Usually claims are dodgey. Creative bookeeping.

Not that I'm aware of. I also am not rich by any means and tried to make that clear to her.

You can check by counting customers. Assume each one is spending 50 baht.

    Seems a bit high.

Possible. Main questions would be how much competition there was nearby, and how wide her stock is.

She is the only grocery in the village apparently. Her stock is general foodstuffs and sundries. Nothing special

I had doubts, given that the average income in chiang mai is probably around 10k baht per month, and it made me wonder how they would have enough to spend 10k baht per day in her store, when furthermore many grow their own rice and so on.

It's a fantastic amount for a lil village store to pull in each day, too fantastic to be believed.

Could be. But it is not easy work. Long hours etc. Up at dawn.....

    If it's a 7/11 copy, not a village shop.
Wife's uncle has a fair sized shop in our village, I'm his biggest customer, beer and cigs, they sell everything including fuel.
His wife and 2 daughters run the place, good day 5,000 Baht turnover, so may be 500 profit after costs.

That 300 tax is most likely local amphor or orbitor tax, plus they should have a VAT tax, not much and a booze and cigarette license,

No money in it, or I would have built one and you have to give credit, otherwise people go to another shop.

If you're open from 6am-8pm, sell cigs, whiskey and beer, and crisps and washing powder, and frogs and eels and all that shit, 10k will come easy. Profit, however, will not.

I agree - depends as noted it depends on how wide a produce selection - groceries, household needs (detergent) school supplies (papers/pencils) candy snacks, beer and spirits, some prepared foods - some bulk stuff - depending on the locale, I should think 10K could be quite easy.

These shops cover a lot of territory from a wood shack carrying a few packets of rice and candy, to a essentially full on general store.

The nearest one to me (in a suburb of BK) probably pulls down 2 to 3 times that - easily.

Post some pics here. We like pics. Worth a thousand words I've heard.

Those like jamescollister and slap who have lived in the sticks know the score.
My wife had a small village shop for about 3 years, worst monthly takings was 30k and best about 150k ( songkran ) profit about 15% on all takings ...tax about 300 a year ( so that's about right )......... plus licenses for Beer and Cigs ( about 150 Baht each a year if I remember rightly ).
What pissed the Mrs off most was the constant asking to lend money to the Locals and giving goods on tick.....knowing it would take forever and a day to get it back with some customers.Shutting the shop ( because of family problems ) was a happy day for her !
If a small Village shop was run like a 7/11 with no credit given they can be a good earner but for some strange reason Village shops must give credit and leand money or as James has said they will just be boycotted by the locals and even Family !!

You'd be surprised. My local shopkeeper's weekly lau khao order is massive. The fucker takes delivery from an articulated lorry. He's a callous, soul ravaging purveyor of concentrated chemicals, no less.
