The big bastards are indeed hornets, raiding the nest and probably eating the young / eggs. The bees look to be just hanging around letting them get on with it, hoping they might leave something.
This seems to be the nature of the large hornets. The really big ones like the Japanese species absolutely massacre other bee colonies:

be aware that the nest will only get bigger and bigger, ive been stung by those big buggers a few times and they hurt like hell. If there are any young kids about you'll need to remove the nest pronto.

    Further update.

The nest is gone. I got Somchai, the handyman, to get rid of it.

Yes Thais think that these are lucky until they sting you! They don't really have much of a sting, not compared to the local bees or the Tor Hua Sua, but if you have kids then a cup of petrol at night might be a wise idea. Normally these buggers hide their nests in the bushes and scrub, unusual to see them out in the open like that. They will attack if disturbed. I would prefer the good luck to be on my side and either burn em or get a tin of that ARS spray, it drops them almost instantly - I have used that Baygon spray before and it only aggravates them for about 5 minutes before dropping them, enough time for multiple stings....ARS is 100%

Mrs. is happy, she reckons that they are good luck.
I have them on my farm, they can sting especially the head but the sting does not last as long as our bee stings form the UK. one hour and the pain is gone. What we do is get a long bamboo cane, tie a piece of rag on the end, soak in oil and set it alight, then wave it around the nest. When they go grab the nest and eat it, delicious. Even without the nest they will return though to make another

Some say the sting from those big hornets is therapeutic.

While I hung out at the Bang Chang Siam health resort they had a huge nest in the communal area, one poor gal got stung repeatedly by those big boys, it hurt, she cried, but she got better, some kind of cancer.

They never stung me, just cruised around my head from time to time as I gazed out a window sitting very still. It's really cool to feel and hear the powerful buzz when they get close to you.
