Unlocking Iphone from USA

Hi, Has any one from the u.s.a had an Iphone unlocked in Thailand recently? Att just put the clamp down on unlocking your phone here in the states because they are greedy mofo's. I checked around last year in Pattaya and Bangkok they wanted 4,000 baht to do it that seemed way to high it used to be 400 a few years ago.

If any one has recent experience I would love to hear about it.

Just a follow up I found some sim card devise that will supposedly unlock my iPhone. I will try it next week when I get back to Thailand. If it works great it was only $17.

I do androids so not real familiar with Ios but I have seen a kit for sale that has a chip and other things with it that unlocks Iphones sold here in thailand. But really any decent mobile repair shop can prob unlock it for you.

Iphone 4 and up can only be unlocked by the carrier as the registry (lock/unlock) is held by Apple.
Most carriers will allow you to unlock it for a small fee ($25-50 I think)
Once they notify the Apple registry you just restore the phone to unlock it.
People who claim to be able to unlock it for you just piggyback on this functionality.
