Been here 4 years mate. Two and a half in Samui and one and a half in the jungle.
I prefer the jungle but I do miss civilisation occasionally.
Rural Surin was the child of a diplomat so you must make allwoances for him. He speaks Thai with an Oregon accent. He's never met me and his opinions, like his posts are therefore worthless.

To be honest I would be most happy constantly on the move but would be piss poor in no time.
Wife and kids is a bit of a heavy anchor as well.
He has no real ties nor irons in the vested fire.
I believe his time in Asia/Thailand [short one] is considered novel, still.
He'll never be comfortable outside of anything that doesn't resemble the beloved West [or England].

Possibly, I never visited Thailand in those good ol' days.

The attitude was polite without being servile, you can stay up all night like an adult 'cos the bars are open, and if you're up early for breakfast there's croisant, croc monsieur, pastis and coffee everywhere. The expats there were interesting and helpful, the police were obvious in keeping the tourists safe and the red light scene was away from the main part of town.

I got the impression that in terms of tourism Cambodia has decided it doesn't want to make the same mistakes as Thailand, overt corruption, blatant sex tourism, hostile attitude. Obviously the place has it's problems and hazards, but there is a real sense of freedom there.

I set out from Pattaya with a friend that loves his comfort zone and does not take risk, I said lets go for a couple of days and if you don't like it we'll come back. We stayed for 5 weeks and we still talk about what a great time we had there.

    My previous nic.. obviously
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

Not so much anymore....as Isaan has largely become populated with these same types that you speak of. And doesn't particularly apply to Brits only: add Yanks, Germans, Scandanavians, etc....

It's very rare that I agree with Buttercup, but yes...
most of the good 'Brits' have left England or are in some way trying to escape.

I have to disagree; Thailand is booming, more or less, the economy is good and life is improving for the majority

there is no downward slide, it has been all uphill since the long ago crash in 1997
If you think Thailand has been economically going uphill since 1997 you do not know anything at all about the real Thailand.

64% of those recently polled by the BP stated their life was worse after 2012. So where do you get the facts that the country is improving for most?

37th worst education system out of 41? Is this an improvement? Actually it is quite a decrease over the past years

Corruption index at an all-time high? All time high is not a good thing in case you don't understand

Is this what you mean Thailand is much better off?

Have you ever got off your ass and seen any of Thailand outside of the tourist areas you live in or moved from?

Have you ever been to Isan because I bet you couldn't find one person to agree with you that their life is getting better.

2013 and there are still villages in Isan that only 1 out 10 houses have running water. Man their life must be getting better according to you.

2012 has Thailand with the highest national debt percentage of GDP in the history of the country

    Nearing 50%

You are probably the type of guy that reads the headlines "Exports up 22%" and think the country is running great economically until you read past the "flash" headlines Thai's are famous for printing to the real truth that during the same period imports increased 29% for a US $200,000,000 deficit in one quarter

The price of daily goods such as food, fuel and utilities have already risen higher than the minimum wage hike of 300 baht. So in truth, the people are not gaining, their life is not improving, it is going financially backwards

The Electric commission has already published electric rates will rise each of the next 20 years

Rising crime and looking at the number of thefts and robberies is an indication people need money, not they are doing well

Did you read the news today

Chiangmai Politician Pushes For Second Airport

This was Thaksin's idea before he was shown the door.

If you think Thailand is on the up and up, wait a few more years until Chiang Mai is as worse off as Bangkok and inherits all the same problems. Then tell us how great life is

You talk allot on this forum, but in reality you are the one with no options and no where else to go

I would rather listen to people lay out all their real world challenges/troubles here and what they plan on doing in the future, than listen to someone like you that never really admits to anything with any substance

Give credit to those with enough courage to address their issues and seek answers

2011 Thailand suffered horrific financial losses in the floods and the red shirts destroying downtown Bangkok

89 dead, Thai's killing each other and foreigners

So far, the country still going up according to you

Well if you believe Thailand is your Utopia, good on you mate

Let the rest of us with real world decisions hash this out and learn from each other
    without any Utopian interference

If your life is so great, no need to comment on all the whiners here is there?

I am sure in your Utopia you have much more fun things to do than waste your time chastising the whiners

Money, its all about "money". Doesn't matter where you decide to settle and build your nest, as long as you have lots of dosh.

Sure, lets hope you find your very own bali hai at the other end of a plane trip.
Careful- don't let those revolving doors at swampy slam yer ass on the way out.

As far as some subjective index of good/ bad life goes, none of the Isaan folk I know waste much time talking about it apart from the odd grumble about the price of rice or pork going up- they just get on with life. Might be some wisdom in that. But the steadily increasing number of new tractors, cars, motosai's, uni students & houses around the place leads me to believe that life goes on, as always.

    no, it isn't
