If you call the BIB it will end up your fault some how so get the insurance involved from the start.
Get the BiB if you can.
All else will come back to haunt you.
Sister in law (Farang) was driving my truck last Saturday.
Some teenager shot out of his driveway, made a flying U-turn on the intersection and slammed into the truck. The truck was stationary, because my SiL had stopped for the lunatic and was quite slow anyway as she was approaching the crossroad.
The boy and a friend(?), who came over from the nearby soccerfield carried the motorcycle back to their house, then went of for soccer on foot.
They didn't even glance back.
But the boys mother came out of the house nagging her head of in Thai.
My SiL called me, asking what to do.
I asked her if anybody got hurt and how much damage was done.
She answered the boys went to play soccer, so seemed to be fine.
The front wheel of the bike is bent and my bumper had nasty scratch on the left side.
I thought "this nasty scratch is there since almost a year" and told her, when the boys went for soccer and carried off all the evidence, she should not bother with police and just drive off.
(That seemed the reasonable thing to do since the teens will certainly not have insurance or money anyway and one wouldn't want to upset the locals where one does business.)
I forgot in my mental equation that my wife (also farang) had an accident very close to that spot around Sonkran last year. She was so ridden with guild that she organized a VIP room at the local hospital for that guy with his broken leg and paid some extra compensation after the guy (together with 2 helpful hospitals, their doctors and his family) had maxed out the limit on the 1st class insurance!
(Details can be found in an old tread.)
Word must have gotten around, that some bike rider had an accident with a Farang lady in that Farangs trucks. Clearly the mental cash registers went ca-tshingggg and a couple of hours later we had a delegation of the local populace at our factory gate, informing us, that they had reported the sister in law for an "Hit and run" and demanding money.
Quickly I was blamed for giving the stupid advice of leaving the accident scene, even thought staying wouldn't have made any difference, just held the chance of a stoning as the evening got later and the locals got more drunk.
Anyhow, the wife of my BiB (Thai!) went out and gave them a vocal shelling including my arguments that they did the hit and run first and would be liable to pay the repair to my front bumper. After which they dropped all charges.
So the conclusion of that long story:
Get the BiB!
Now that you have got that off you chest and had time to wipe the foam from your mouth, why don't you take the oppinutinity to give so detail, perhaps with examples from the thread. You perhase could suggest how the OP could have handled the situation in a more culturally sensitive way. If you make a good enough case perhaps you might be able to help us to see the world your way without drinking large volumes of lao know first.
^^I always aim to please.
I work on the assumption that they are all trying to kill me and themselves at all times... I cannot describe the idiocy you see on a daily basis driving around the ringroad at 120kph; the road up to Nakhon Pathom (the big long named road...) also has more than its fair share of morons.
You cannot avoid them all, they come at you from all sides at all times and they don't have any brains. It's a challenge.
Cycling should be banned!!!
We've all done worse after a few beers... Bet she's a good 'driver' though; must ask Socal.Originally Posted by ralphlsasser

Yes, they are oportunistic money loving lying kuntz... I don't even speak to the fukers; I always have 1st class insurance and just call them, I don't even speak to the Thais, just look at them with complete distain - also useful to have somebody to call should you need to put some fukin Thai wannabe in place should he/she try to give it the large one. Trying to be kind to them in these situations or treat them s you'd like to be treated yourself, is an error - different country, different rules; just make sure you have everything in place to do as well as you can under their rules; they soon get the idea and fuk off...Originally Posted by amazon777

Given how upset we have made geof with this thread I think I should balance things out a bit so he doesn't start foaming again.Originally Posted by Bettyboo
Its not that thai people are stupid or have no brains, its simply that a lot of people run their lives for the minute and tend to be very impulsive and reactionary in how that go about their lives.
In driving this manifests itself in a general absence of road craft, where you are driving know for what you believe may happen in the near future and an enthusiasm for driving on the assumption that everyone around you will get out of your way and thus prevent an accident.
Its become quite routine when I am turning right into my soi for drivers to simply see the situation for what it is at that instant. my car is stationary, in their way and they can avoid me by overtaking on the outside. They do not bother to note that I am indicating right I will turn right and if I do not see them coming, that I will turn in to them and quite possibly kill them
So you condone hit and run driving, driving uninsured, and lying?Originally Posted by geoff
You are the one with major problems my friend.
^I could have written that better couldn't I
I have come frightening close. We were out driving last night, someone was running in the road, turns round looks at us and continues to run parallel to the road. Then without warning they turn and cut across the road about 2m in front of us. Better half manages to stop with about one or two feet to spare, I'm convinced that if I had been driving I would have hit him, bastard just carries on running across the road as nothing had happened. I tell you this and some other near misses we have had, have made us seriously consider installing a forward facing camera in the car; I used to think it was paranoid.... now I am beginning to think its simply prudent.
It is a good idea, as JJ has made clear, but you'd need about 16 cameras because they come at you from all angles.Originally Posted by hazz
It's non-stop, I can fully understand your example - they are utter brainless lunatics. I was doing 130kph on the ringroad and the car coming alongside me just veered into me - I had luckily looked in the mirror and noticed the twat on his mobile phone, eating some fruit and chatting to the 'co-driver', and managed to veer into the third lane; he would have just come straight into the side of me... as they do, speeding up the inside or outside non-lanes then as the road runs out just turn into you forcing you to take evassive action to avoid a potentially fatal high speed accident... fukers, I hate them all...
Some good ideas and suggestions in this thread for novice that is learning the ropes regarding living here
i was driving taking my daughter to school last month and the hood flew up and smashed the windshield. I was able to drive her to school after securing the hood and call my insurance, he was there within 15 min, asked what happened and i told him, he took his photos and then wrote it up for the car repair shop. I asked him if i could also get the bumper fixed ( many small dents and scraps) he said sure;
so they took the car: new hood, new windshield, repainted the roof and both front fenders and bumper all for 2,000 baht!!!
Always call the company in an accident !!!
Didn't read the whole thread so sorry if someone already mentioned this, but if she had no insurance "none, whatsoever" then that means she hasn't paid her road tax either (the disk that sticks on the windscreen that says "2555" etc).
In order to get the tax disk, we all must show the mandatory third-party insurance has been paid - it's nominal but mandatory (600 baht or somehing like that). They won't issue the tax sticker otherwise. Third Party means her insurance company (mandatory insurance) will cover damage she's caused to third party. A tip for next time someone pulls that bullshit on you.
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!
Actually, we changed company.
I felt quite guilty, the standard insurance that came with the new Honda was 21k, and the missus had 3 or 4 accidents which were all sorted out without us paying 1 baht - excellent they were, and they certainly lost money on us during the year.
At the end of the year, another insurance company phoned us (owned by the credit company; quite sneeky I thought...) offering exactly the same cover for 17.5k; they even offered us 6 month instalments at no charge. I wanted to stay with the original company, but the missus decided to move to the second; if we have a claim (which we haven't yet and the year is nearly up) and get problems then I will be left saying 'I told you so', and doubtless out of pocket...
The compulsory government insurance (minimum legal requirement) does not cover third party property damage. So the women was right in saying she had no insurance which would cover the damage, but that does not necessarily mean she was driving around totally uninsured and therefore illegally.
