Good hospital in Bangkok for back op'

My mate in Australia needs to have an operation on his back (L5-S1) and is thinking about having it done in Thailand, for a number of reasons. Can anyone recommend a good hospital in Bangkok that does back operations ? I contacted the Bumrungrad Hospital over a week ago but they have not replied yet, (how unusual)
Does not have to be Bangkok, anywhere in Thailand will do.
    Thanks,

Why would he not have it done in OZ?
I am guessing he is on a wait list with only basic Medicare cover?

He has been told he could have to wait 5 years and if he wants it done sooner the cost is way out of his league.

Bangkok Nursing Home in Soi Convent is one of the best for these type of things.

The way most small dental clinics work here is that dentists/specialists don't work for a single place, but have a rotating schedule and visit several places. Therefore, recommending a clinic not so useful, quality depends on the dentist on duty.

There are several dental clinics in Siam Square area (e.g. along Phaya Thai rd across from MBK). I had some work done in 2 of those, good English, clean place & thorough work (held up for 3 years so far), good English spoken. Neither particularly expensive nor cheap.

Might be worth a call to Bangkok Christian. It depends on the surgeon.

I didn't have back surgery but...

If HE is paying it is worth a day trip to Chula Teaching Hospital for an exam. If they can do it the surgeons likely work at Bumrumgrad or BNH also. So same expertise, cheaper care.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

Try Siriraj Hospital, across the river, Professor Montri personally realigned my nose for a mere 15,000Baht in 2003.

I hear good things about Thai hospitals like BNH and Bumrungrad, but also some less flattering stories. I guess the deal with medical care in Thailand is when it goes well you save $$$ and get nice foot massages and scores of smiling, pretty nurses. When it goes wrong you are on your own.

Personally for a major op I'd find the money for an operation in a good private hospital back home even if it meant moving to a smaller house to pay for it.

Hootad Binky has an interesting thread on TD about that somewhere.
