Thread: Vientiane Restaurants; I'd kill an Indian

Despite living only 24 km from Vientiane for the last 12 odd years, I've never actually ventured across the border from NK since 1998. Well, work circumstances dictate that I'm here right now and I'm in need of up-to-date advice on good eateries (I don't need to sample the Lao food as I eat variants of it all the time in Isan).

Last night I had a fantastic pizza at Via Via, but tonight I fancy an Indian. Years ago I used to eat at the place by the fountain, but I've just returned from up there and the place is a construction site with only froggie food available. Does anyone have any Indian restaurant recommendations? I'm here for a couple more days at least and any advice on other international restaurants would also be appreciated.

I have a friend here in Udon Stani who makes the best curry you will ever eat. They're about 150B for a large 250g portion and he does a good range. He does Bombay tatties and onion bhajees too.

Isn't there an Indian along the riverfront, not too far from the Mexican?

Last night I observed at least 3 on the Riverside but they all had zero customers. That's why I went for the pizza at Via Via, as the place was packed.

Edit: Mexican tonight sounds good. Indian tomorrow - they always taste better the day after.

I didn't say any of them would be good. In fact, I'm fairly sure that they'll be shit, like all the Indian restaurants in Thailand are.

Be careful with the bahjees down by the riverside.
Can't remember if it Nazeems or Fatimas where I ordered the the onion bahjee, but it was basically battered onion rings.

Ok - had a feking glorious tandoori chicken, seriously good, at a place right on the riverfront at a place that sounds like Alzheimers. I forget exactly. Walking back to the hotel I was then was accosted by a ladyboy pickpocket, who was only successful in pinching (and subsequently dropping) 5 or 6 sukudo puzzles and my pen. Mind you, 'it' had a fantastically colourful language. What's the world coming to? Beach Road on the River Road.

I've been searching for a Croatian BYO restaurant in Vientiane but with no avail.

Try the Full Moon Bar near the Tai Pan Hotel for good tucker and ambiance. My fave place in VT.

For good Indian you gotta go to Penang or Melaka. Its pretty cheap down there too.
