Tough question to answer. We have no idea how many there were to begin with and don't know how many there are now. What can be stated for certain, the ones who were and have died due to military action or suicide are less. What we don't know is, have the number of new recruits exceeded the number killed?

If you can count it, it's fewer.
For example: fewer terrorists.

If you can't count it, you use less.
For example less intelligence.

To sum: You might say less potassium perchlorate, but fewer kilograms of potassium perchlorate -- because you can't count potassium perchlorate but you can count the kilograms.

A terrorist is somebody who uses fear (terror) to get their own way because they don't have the power of the media behind them.

Terrorism hasn't changed much in essence since Dresden or Hiroshima. The objective of terrorism is to terrorize the enemy population en masse and force their political leaders to relinquish hostilities. In days gone by back in the era of WW2 only the military powers had the ability to mount significant terrorist attacks against an enemy nation. But times have changed and the world is a much smaller place now. Relatively small para-military organizations now have the ability to use terrorism as a tactic to advance their political cause against the overwhelming military might of countries like USA, UK and Russia. Expansionist regimes like those mentioned previously should think twice about the economic price of using conventional military might to dominate smaller countries these days. I guess they will figure it out eventually though.

^ Spot on Panda. I personally think American strategy of dealing with terrorists have proven wrong. It's about time they realise and change their ways.

Indeed - seems like what the US did in Dresden and Hiroshima worked out rather well in the long run (well at least for the US), and what the US is doing now has had rather limited results. Maybe there are some lessons the powers that be could learn from history?

UK was a big player in Dresden. The argument rages over weather Dresden or Hiroshima was justified but not my intention to take a stance here. What is interesting "things worked out rather well" for both Germany and Japan. I would argue far more so than the US. Maybe there are some lessons to be learned?

Causes

1. Religion: And as we read about everyday.
2. Alcohol abuse: Main cause of family distruption, household abuse and persoanl terrorism.
3. Drugs/ Narcotics: A form of terrorism when an addict breaks into a family home and bails up a family to steal money for his next hit.
4. Economic greed: We are all being terrorised by exploding oil prices and costs of living rises caused exclusively by greedy autocrats and capitalists.

1 and 4 in my opinion are the main terroists.
