    extraordinary rendition

my guess is the government of the US invented this term because 'outsourced torture' doesn't have the same ring to it. here's the wiki definition...i looked for a US govt definition but couldn't find it. if you can, please post any definition from the white house or dept. of defense.

Extraordinary rendition is an American extra-judicial procedure which involves the sending of untried criminal suspects, suspected terrorists or alleged supporters of groups which the US Government considers to be terrorist organizations, to countries other than the United States for imprisonment and interrogation.
Extraordinary rendition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and you might be asking yourself, what is ordinary rendition....and as always, i'm here to please...

in law, rendition is a "surrender" or "handing over" of persons or property, particularly from one jurisdiction to another. For criminal suspects, extradition is the most common type of rendition. Rendition can also be seen as the act of handing over, after the request for extradition has taken place.
Rendition (law) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

so if you rob a bank in the US, and think you're going to spend your new found wealth in bermuda...guess again. you will be rendered to the US for trial.

with extraordinary rendition there is no trial, just the presumption of guilt and lot's of torture. and not your average run of the mill abu ghraib / guantanamo torture, it's the unimaginable. actually, because of GWB's determined efforts in support of torture , it's exactly the type of torture that US military personnel are going to experience if they get captured from this point forward...but that's another topic.

i have little doubt that some of the frightened posters on this forum can find the merits in this type of state sponsored frequent flyer torture, but let's not forget the competence levels of those making the decisions...macro and micro.

Canadian intelligence officials passed false warnings and bad information to American agents about a Muslim Canadian citizen, after which U.S. authorities secretly whisked him to Syria, where he was tortured, a judicial report found Monday.

The report, released in Ottawa, was the result of a 2 1/2-year inquiry that represented one of the first public investigations into mistakes made as part of the United States' "extraordinary rendition" program, which has secretly spirited suspects to foreign countries for interrogation by often brutal methods.

(He) was detained by U.S. authorities as he changed planes in New York on Sept. 26, 2002. He was held for questioning for 12 days, then flown by jet to Jordan and driven to Syria. He was beaten, forced to confess to having trained in Afghanistan -- where he never has been -- and then kept in a coffin-size dungeon for 10 months before he was released, the Canadian inquiry commission found.

how are these people different from 'the disappeared' in pinochet's chile?

but this guy, for whatever reason, is still alive. perhaps i should have posted this in the 'compensation' thread, because this guy is going to have truck loads of cash pulling up to his house...as he should.

    That's outrageous.

As Colin Powell so eloquently stated in a letter that really angered Bush: we have lost the moral basis for our fight against terrorism.

notice now that the GWB white house is saying the CIA doesn't have any detainees in its custody.

well, that's because they're currently getting tortured in syria, egypt and the more abscure countries that end in '-istan'.

    "Torture" Techniques Revealed

"Here's the eeeeeevvvvviiiiiiilllllllll "torture" that John McCain, Andrew Sullivan, Ted Kennedy, & Company think is just too cruel to be used on terrorists who saw the heads off of Americans and support flying planes into our buildings:

"The techniques sought by the CIA are: induced hypothermia; forcing suspects to stand for prolonged periods; sleep deprivation; a technique called "the attention grab" where a suspect's shirt is forcefully seized; the "attention slap" or open hand slapping that hurts but does not lead to physical damage; the "belly slap"; and sound and light manipulation."
Here's how this "torture" plays out in the real world:

"Several of those techniques chime with information gleaned about interrogation methods used against some serious terror suspects. The New York Times recently reported that Abu Zubaydah, the first al-Qaida member captured after the September 11 attacks, was kept in a freezing cell until he went blue, and later assailed with loud Red Hot Chili Peppers music."
I love the image of a murderous terrorist shivering in his cell while two giant speakers pump infidel music like, "Love Rollercoaster," into his cell. The only way it could be better would be if he had to watch a giant TV screen with The Hebrew Hammer," in constant loop.

In any case, the people who think that using a "belly slap" or "sleep deprivation" is too extreme, really have skewed priorities. We're talking about getting information from these terrorists that may prevent the next 9/11 using techniques that aren't any rougher than what our troops go through in basic training or what a college football team has to endure in the course of a season. If those are the worst techniques that we use on terrorists, then they're getting off light."

ummmmmmmm.........i'm glad you found the wherewithal to join the thread, but your post has absolutely NOTHING to do with extraordinary rendition.

if you want to start a thread about torture methods used by the US govt on US soil or military bases, i'd be interested to read the posts and make some of my own.

thus, i'd like to recommend that you re-read the OP and try again!

    whoops!

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 — In an embarrassing turnabout, the Department of Justice backed away Wednesday from a denial by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales of responsibility for the treatment of a Canadian who was seized by American authorities in 2002. The man was deported to Syria, where he was imprisoned and beaten.

Asked at a news conference on Tuesday about a Canadian commission’s finding that the man, Maher Arar, was wrongly sent to Syria and tortured there, Mr. Gonzales replied, “Well, we were not responsible for his removal to Syria.” He added, “I’m not aware that he was tortured.”

The attorney general’s comments caused puzzlement because they followed front-page news articles of the findings of the Canadian commission. It reported that based on inaccurate information from Canada about Mr. Arar’s supposed terrorist ties, American officials ordered him taken to Syria, an action documented in public records.

On Wednesday, a Justice Department spokesman said Mr. Gonzales had intended to make only a narrow point: that deportations are now handled by the Department of Homeland Security, not the Department of Justice.
    right.

The first criminal trial over the CIA's "extraordinary rendition" of terror suspects has opened in Italy.

Twenty-six Americans and six Italians are accused of kidnapping an Egyptian terror suspect and sending him to Egypt, where he was allegedly tortured.

The Americans - most believed to be CIA agents - will be tried in absentia.

Italy has not announced if it will seek their extradition to the Milan trial.
US President George W Bush will arrive in Italy hours after the trial opens.
    extraordinary rendition = outsourced torture.

let there be no doubt that america lost the moral high ground.

and for all of the american posters on this board, these atrocities are being committed in your name.

This is a thread from a couple of months back, the OP being a very good article by George Monbiot on the now seemingly acceptable use of torture-

I'm off-topic here, Ray and others but here's a brief snipped on a ruling pertaining to U.S. citizens:

    Updated: 3:36 p.m. PT June 11, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. - The Bush administration cannot use new anti-terrorism laws to keep U.S. residents locked up indefinitely without charging them, a divided federal appeals court said Monday.

oh man. the more we learn, the worse it is.

The United States is operating "floating prisons" to house those arrested in its war on terror, according to human rights lawyers, who claim there has been an attempt to conceal the numbers and whereabouts of detainees.

Extraordinary rendition is simply the american prolix euphemism for the crime of kidnapping.

They have a quaint history of this, notably, to terminate with extreme prejudice meaning to murder or assassinate and collateral damage i.e. to inflict innocent civilian deaths.

Such semantic gymnastics however serve a purpose in that a buffer of unreality is created between those who perpetrate such crimes and the public to whom they are meant to be accountable. It certainly helps if the public are american in which case the addition of bovine stupidity and unquestioning acceptance all helps to protect the establishment from consequences that may flow from their actions.

Unfortunately, international action in the case of ' extraordinary rendition ' is weak. A perverse osmosis exists whereby alleged offenders can be extradited to the US but traffic t'other way simply doesn't occur. The case of the CIA thugs who kidnapped victims and transited through Italy is a case in point but who knows, maybe justice will prevail.

I shall not hold my breath.
