    Guy Fawkes Day, 2009

A British historical event on November 5th, and that was and is celebrated, is noted by the non-British now as well.

I'd like to hear any British opinions on Guy Fawkes and the holiday.

    Same old story, religious extremist.

Brainwashed at an early age. This time by Catholics.

Plan was to kill the King of England, the heir and ironically most of the Catholic aristocracy.

    Anyway, he was betrayed.

When I was young I didn't know whether he was good or bad. It just meant bonfires and fireworks.

But obviously he was a terrorist. A 'non-government authorised agent of intended or actual murder or destruction.'

Not really that different from the invasion of Iraq really if one substitutes 'bombing of UK parliament' for 'weapons of mass destruction'.

Neither plot worked out as intended though, although both were conceived as ways to circumvent inconvenient laws..

Being a Catholic, I object to the idea of any ritual burning of any image of my Catholic brother

I do see the entire case as Ironic, particularly for those the hold his name in honour.

    For the reasons noted above.

Perhaps his martyrdom - or perceived martyrdom - has inspired others, even though it is symbolic inspiration.

Like the fact that a non-conformist anarchist is honoured and celebrated each year, even if it's to burn his arse. Good excuse for a party at this time of year when the clocks have gone back and winter's kicking in....Kids love it, sparklers and all, NHS don't: emergencies. Oldies and dogs hate it as kids let off bangers weeks before and after. English culure, innit!

Vicariously versus voluminous for the vacuum of volume in vadimony presented.

Vacant my vaniloquence and votive of avoiding vapulation and varia, and in interest of earlier variorum I proffer a venial, verecund verbigeration.
With versability and voluntarily videlicet view this as vis-a-vis a visceral visible video without vitilitigation, yet with vitality and voraciousness as volunteered!

/also 'vulviform' is a word, but I couldn't work it in there
