Under military law I believe you have to be executed within 6 months or else it is viewed as a form of torture and the sentence is commuted.

I think a Jewish person would say it is a word best avoided in modern times because it carries a historical tone of 'not like us' in a judgmental way. It can be used as slang. Saying 'not one of us' is not the same as saying gentile or non-Jew.

I think it's possible to find a whitewashed definition of the word to suit this argument. The thing to do is ask Jewish people what they think and listen for an honest answer.
