| What the F*** is goin on in the UK Criminal record for leaving bin open A man has been fined £225 for not closing his bin lid. Gareth Wilson-Corkhill's bin was so full with rubbish that the lid was open by four inches. Unfortunately for Gareth a council enforcement saw the bin and issued an on-the-spot fine. However he refused to pay the initial £110 fixed penalty and was taken to court. After it went to court he was hit with £100 prosecution costs and a £15 surcharge bringing his total bill to £225. Mr Wilson-Corkhill, 26, of Whitehaven, Cumbria, told The Sun: "I was in shock when I found out about the fine. I couldn't believe they would do that. I don't leave the rubbish on the floor. Every fortnight you can guarantee people's bins will be open more than mine. "I have my rubbish collected every fortnight. There are five people in my family, three children, me and my wife. Plus I have my daughter over on weekends. We recycle everything we can. We have a black box that is always full. "It's only an £80 fine for fly-tipping. I would have been better off doing that." He added: "I was told I would go to prison if I didn't pay the fine." A spokesman for Copeland council said: "We will continue to crack down on the problem of overflowing bins, which causes problems in the battle to reduce waste. Much of your waste can be recycled either via the kerb side recycling scheme, or the nearest recycling collection site." Mark Wallace, from the Taxpayers' Alliance, said the situation was "another sorry tale of a hard working individual's life blighted by petty bureaucracy". Don't think I ever want to go back, the rules and law are so draconian

| It's this kind of thing which eventually made me leave, it's also the kind of thing you forget about after you left and been in Thailand a while, luckily us English have these reports which remind us of the dire situation. BTW, the people of Cumbria know Whitehaven as "Shitehaven". The original name is rarely used these days. |

| Wat Sri Chum | This place is fast becoming the cesspit of western Europe. Nothing wrong with the country its self, just the people running it. Theyve even started fortnightly rubbish collections in most areas (yet the council tax is rising above inflation). No wonder his bin was over flowing. Having said that, he should think about recycling more. There should be a great big sign on this country saying "OUT OF ORDER". I`m seriously considering becoming an immigrant, and moving in with the "jocks" or "Taffs". ![]()

| Elite Member | I stopped 4 youths vandalising some property belonging to a road contruction firm. In doing so I physically had to restrain one youth and escort him off of the contractors property. Within one hour I was arrested and locked up due to the youth reporting me for assault. I was detained for about 4 hours before the police decide that the youth was lying. Was he charged with any offence ? No. This for me was the deciding factor in getting out of that shit hole. |

| Quote: Collected once a fortnight (rats are running amok) Microchips secretly fitted in bins to make sure that we don't throw out too much rubbish Plastic, paper & glass must be stored seperately (or they leave it on the road), only for all the seperated rubbish to go on the same pile at the dump Bins not collected if they are deemed to be 'too heavy' (they are lifted by the truck, the bin men only have to wheel them about). The list goes on. | |

| Maybe they wouldn't be so heavy if they were collected more than twice a month. Even in my little Thai baan here, they collect every Monday. I won't expound further as it would be regarded as chest beating and braggidocio. Forbidden it seems. Last edited by Texpat : 23-04-2008 at 07:58 PM. |
