It very much depends on who says it and how, whether such references are intended or not. A seemingly innocuous remark about someone's physical features can be deeply offensive, either intentionally or perceived to be by the reader. Not saying Chinthee implied anything of the sort, in fact I am sure he didn't.

Just answering the question about the difference in comparing Bush and Michelle to a monkey. Is there any doubt that either is offensive?
Or is it just stating a 'fact', or maybe even making a valuable contribution to a political discussion?

^Yes, Stroller is right that not knowing the speaker's background or the context, when comparing people to monkeys, with regard to blacks, there is an underlying racist connotation that can be errantly read into the speaker's comments. I think on this board Butterfly refers to Thais as monkeys and refers to the Thai language as "speaking monkey." That is certainly not flattering, and I suppose you could argue there is a racist connotation to that too.

Bush as a white man monkey doesn't evoke the same imagery.

At the same time, the OP's kneejerk over the top one-color simplistic paintbrush he uses to indict all the members he accuses of being racist is nonsense as usual. I don't think for a minute that someone like Jet Gorgon is a racist, and has even mentioned she almost married a black. Sure, there are racists on this board, and sensible intelligent members can probably spot and discern them easily.

it is a type of racism and discrimination, even though I do it to characterize their "cultural" difference which I find annoying some time. I don't see Thai as "inherently" inferior or sub-human though, just "socially" silly, and their behavior make me think of cute monkeys, hence me calling them that way. Apparently I am not the only one, and I have seen many Thais calling other Thais monkeys, in the same spirit, really harmless at the end. However, I would never call a blackman monkey for obvious reasons, as their physical appearance would be the reason for calling it that way and it would be pure racism and discrimination, regardless how they would act.

Why is it always the legacy-thinking guilt-ridden white males who rail against discrimination of blacks only. What about discrimination of Asian females?

Minorities on two counts, but yet we manage to rise above it to attain success in America, and we don't blame anyone else. Yes, we have strong family values, but we have a strong work ethic and determination. We don't get the advantages the hispanics or blacks get.

Honestly? We are scared to death of them generally. It's not in a racist or hatred kind of way, but just generally fearful of their reputation and also perhaps there is something physically intimidating about blacks.

How can you say that your statement is not racist, Faye? You are prejudging individuals based on their race - but deride those that are dismissive of discrimination of Asian females.

To say that blacks or hispanics only get on because of the advantages given to them but that Asians work for any benefits earned is a huge generalisation, don't you think? Surely there are those that fit the stereotype & those that buck it in all groups?

And to say that you (as an individual, or in the grouping of Asian female) are fearful of an entire race & gender because of their reputation & physical appearance? I'm sorry, I don't see how you can get much more racist than that.

If you were a petite Asian woman, and had a small father and mother, you might feel differently. American inner city blacks are very fearsome for Chinese immigrants. Call it irrational if you will, but it is fact.
