| Quote: It's their country, they can have any kind of laws they want. If their laws infringe on your lifestyle then don't go there. It's when ignorant foreigners visit another country/culture and continue to live in a way that their host country deems illegal under the penalty of severe jail time that they get into trouble. With the Bali 9 fiasco just happening he can hardly say he didn't know about the tight drug laws and massive sentences. He's a dumbass. Plain and simple. |

| Sundance is my bff | I guess this is as good a place to ask this as any. I have a son at Uni abroad who spends summers with me. A top kid, top grades, top Uni, etc.. However, he has one big vice. He loves 420. In past summers, I've taken him to KPG and he's had no problems indulging there at that famous place overlooking the sea. However, I don't want the kid to screw up his life next summer. Is it dangerous for him to be smoking in Thialand today? |

If it's about weed, you know it's illegal here and authorities are less lax about it than they used to be. He'd still stand a fair chance to get out of it before it reaches court, if caught. All sorts of drugs are accessible, but with an obvious risk when you're new and don't know your sources.

Applying this logic is it OK to create/have just a little child porn? Just a few magazines and a few hundred pics for personal consumption? Nothing serious like selling or anything. Not sure what part of illegal you're having trouble with.

If he gets caught/grassed up he could be fined anywhere from $100 to $10,000 and get anything from being free after an hour to being sent to a Thai prison for any amount of time. The police here generally get paid commision on how much they bust so it's in their best interest to set him up with more than he had. If he gets caught pay what ever they ask for as soon as they ask for it. However... it's a pretty stupid thing to plan for. Enjoy what the country has to offer without doing illegal practices that can and have resulted in very very heavy sentences in very ugly circumstances. It's not worth it.

A fundamental tenet of justice is matching the punishment with the the crime. Using your other analogy, that means an actual kiddie fiddler would incur a greater punishment than some idiot in possession of child porn on his HDD. I said before, Indon is corrupt to the core if you rub it the wrong way. Laws there are, I believe, deliberately kept ambigous for this very purpose. The guy won't be executed, but whoever he crossed has now got him safely out the way.

Ok, This is how the system works on Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. If the cops catch you smoking a joint they will grass you up for 60,000 Baht and this considered the normal buy out price. It used to be 50,000 Baht but they have bumped it up. This is not 100% set in concrete as you might just get caught by a cop who decides he will put you through the correct channels just for a giggle and I'm serious about this, as I've seen many banged up in the police station on Koh Tao because they could not raise the money or got caught buy the wrong cop. One does not want to go through the correct channels as that involves a lot of drama, even though the fine at the end of the day for a bit of pot is only a few thousand Baht and a slap on the wrist. I'm only taking a small amount of pot here and not smack, ecstasy, or yaa baa as the buy out price completely changes with these drugs. I'd tell your young bloke to be very friggin careful, but he wont be worried about it as people think smoking pot on the islands is a joke, until they get caught that is.

| It's not only the risk of being caught with it,but also of having it in your system,if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when they could be doing a pisstest sting. There are still occasional reports ,that this is still going on around the country, and you just, never know. It made me give up "recreational" drugs years ago, after a small club I was in one night, was raided the night after, and everyone, farangs as well, were tested. I decided then, that if my future was in this country,I would have to pull my head in. |

I was first on samui in 87 and they would sell 5 gram bags for 30 baht. No problem back then as the cops were payed off , but once they built the airport in 88 and all the fat German package tourists started poring in they cracked down. The full moon party on Koh Phangan is a goldmine for the cops as they take a small amount of Farang every party and extort them for being twats and getting caught. The cops on Koh Phangan are said to be the richest in the country and its a well sort after posting. I got a great story about a D.E.A agent i know but ill leave it for another time. Be careful kids.
