Hardliner Islamic Violence in Indonesia condemned

I mentioned earlier of this inicident. A group of about 200 FPI goons (Front Pembela Islam which translates as Defenders of Islam Front, or something) violently broke up a peaceful protest/gathering at National Monument because they were the 'wrong' brand of Islam.

However, the general feeling across Indonesia is one of condemnation and outrage, last week the government arrested 74 of these idiots, including their leader Habib Rizieq Shihab.

FPI are the same goons that smashed up the Indonesian Playboy office a few years ago and also smash pubs, restaurants and nightclubs for being open during Ramadan each year.

No arrests previously caused arguments to range from them enjoying governement protection to the government being afraid of them.

Recent talk is suggesting that the timing helps deflect backlash on the government for the recent oil/food inflation crisis

here's an article where they are assigning blame for the whole mess, even the CIA and Mossad get a mention

Explanations for the FPI violence at Monas, blaming the victims, the government, and foreign plots.

    Ahmadiyah

Head of the Muslim Lawyers’ Team (Tim Pengacara Muslim,TPM), Mahendradatta, says the Monas incident was caused by the AKKBB side making deliberately provocative speeches, saying such as things as
the FPI are Laskar Kafir (Infidels’ Front) and Laskar Setan (Satan’s Front).
Other provocations included the ‘fact’ that the AKKBB gathering was illegal, without police permission, and that one AKKBB person was carrying a weapon. [1] Tgk Faisal M Ali of the Himpunan Ulama Dayah Aceh (HUDA) in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) says the government needs to see the incident in a fully formed way, that the root cause is the weakness in the upholding of law in Indonesia, that it still had not banned the Ahmadiyah sect.

Presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng was having none of it however, and said the delay in the publication of the SKB edict concerning Ahmadiyah could not be used as an excuse for assaulting people. [2]

    Conspiracies
Faisal Ali, who was also once the leader of the student group Rabithah Thaliban in Aceh, says he condemned the FPI violence but banning the FPI was not the solution, banning Ahmadiyah was, and if the FPI were banned this would mean the government was allowing the foreign conspiracies in Indonesia to ruin Islam to succeed. [3]

Parliamentarian Soeripto, the Vice Chairman of Commission III in the House of Representatives (DPR) from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS/Partai Keadilan Sejahtera), says he suspects the FPI violence was part of an anti-Islam American plot.

    Soeripto

Soeripto, who has a long history of work in the intelligence field, said Mossad and CIA had already taken over most militant organisations in the world, so they had probably taken over the FPI, and added that Al Qaeda in Afghanistan remained the only “pure” movement left. [4]

i saw this recently on al jazeera.
this group's main gripe is that there can be no muslim who accepts that there is
    more than the one prophet.
if only the muslim leadership (as in the pope for catholics) would preach a little tollerance then even a little may filter through to the ground level.
    until then, nothing will change.

It is not the same, there is dozens of different groups of Muslims, quite many are tolerant, but for some reason the powers that be allow come of these radical nutters to carry on with all sorts of garbage.

The general feeling among the population in Indonesia these days is that under Soeharto, at least we had a dictator, that would not allow these groups to flourish or cause problems, without him, a power vacuum exists and these maniacs have been able to pervert the meaning and intent of Islam for the worse.

    Double Standards.

Jailed leader, Habieb, of the militant FPI, is hardly being curtailed by his imprisonment. A group of supporters rallied outside his jail, so he was allowed outside and given a microphone to address his supporters.

VP: Resolve Ahmadiyah issue with persuasion
Panca Nugraha and Mohamad Abbas, The Jakarta Post, East Lombok, Makassar
Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Thursday the joint ministerial decree prohibiting Ahmadiyah followers from carrying out religious activities was an appropriate measure.

so what happened to freedom of religion? even if they are nutters, they are peaceful nutters.

Speaking at a visit to the Syeh Zainuddin Nadhlatul Wathan (NW) Islamic boarding school in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Kalla said the decision both catered to the demands of mainstream Muslims in the country, and disapproved of violence against the sect's members.

yes, how dare they be the victims of violence for their peaceful beliefs...

"Should there be any teachings incongruous to mainstream Islam, our job is to provide religious guidance and avoid violence, because this is not the Stone Age," he said.
"It is the duty of all Muslims to make our brothers realize the truth and return to the folds of true Islamic teaching."
Kalla said if efforts to proselytize Ahmadis failed, the government would seek other legal options to assimilate the group.

makes indonesia look like the stone age.

other legal options to assimilate the group??

"True Islamic teaching doesn't condone violence. We have to imitate the Prophet's proselytizing methods, especially since it's easier now because of mass media, such as newspapers and television," he said.
Kalla praised NW members for not resorting to violence against Ahmadiyah and for being "perceptive" throughout the controversy. It was the NW who initially raised objections to Ahmadiyah's beliefs and principles by saying the group had tainted Islam's image.
Ummi Raihanun Zam, caretaker of the Syeh Zainuddin school, said she approved of the government's stance in the issue.
"According to NW, Ahmadiyah is an insult and a defamation against true Islamic teaching, and it should not be included in any discussion of religious freedom. So we are very thankful to the government for issuing the decree," she said.

do they not see the irony in this statement??
She added NW members in the province would not use force to "remind Ahmadis they are in the wrong".
In Kalla's native Makassar, Ahmadiyah members have expressed defiance of the decree.
"No matter what the situation, we will always act according to God's wishes and follow the Prophet's sunnah (deeds) without being influenced by the decree," said Saleh Ahmady, head of Ahmadiyah's South Sulawesi chapter.
There are about 3,000 Ahmadis in the region, most of whom continue to carry out regular activities without interruption. Saleh said this was because the people of South Sulawesi were more tolerant of religious differences than those in other provinces.
"Our country is based on the principle of Pancasila, which guarantees religious freedom. Demands to ban Ahmadiyah are clearly against Pancasila," he said.
Makassar Mayor Ilham Arif Sirajuddin said the municipality had yet to receive clarification from the government on what the prohibitions against Ahmadiyah entailed.

The latest in the nutter end of Islam in Aceh.

    BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Indonesia charges 14 'militants'

Police in Indonesia have charged 14 suspected Islamist militants with plotting to launch terrorist attacks.
The men were arrested in several raids over the past 10 days in the mountains of Aceh province.
A police spokesman said the group had been practising weapons use and engaging in military exercises in preparation for "an act of terror".
I knew that was next up as soon as the Indonesian government allowed extremists to run an area of the country.

Like flies round dog shit, it's going to happen.

Not seen a lot about Auntie Gert but I understand it's Euro elections.
Does show there is a serious problem even if he will have a lot less power than the cash he will screw as a Euro politician.
Don't much care about the brand of extremism, they are all as big a bunch of twats as each other.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.

    Muslim leader issues anti-terror fatwa

    Associated Press , London | Tue, 03/02/2010 8:57 PM | World
The leader of a global Muslim movement has issued a fatwa, or religious edict, that he calls an absolute condemnation of terrorism.

Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, a former Pakistani lawmaker, says the 600-page fatwa bans suicide bombing "without any excuses, any pretexts, or exceptions."

Tahir-ul-Qadri has issued similar, shorter decrees, but Tuesday's event in London is being hosted by the Quilliam Foundation, a government-funded, anti-extremism think tank.

The religious scholar is the founder of Minhaj-ul-Quran, a worldwide movement that promotes a nonpolitical, tolerant Islam. The group has hundreds of thousands of followers around the world, most of them in Pakistan or Pakistanis living in other countries.

I've been doing a bit of reading up on old Gert. Nasty little bastard as best I can tell.
I did see a couple of interviews and there is an evil in his face.
Looks like he's going to be PM soon unless something drastic happens.
It will be interesting to see what a right wing nut job does to the country but I suspect less interesting and more a bugger for those living there.

its not that bad is it? He plays to their fears of immigration and islam, but surely the dutch aint that stoopid. Gert reminds me of australia's experiment with Pauline Hanson 10 years ago, she ranted about immigration and asian and abos, but very few educated voters really took her that seriously

Difficult for me to comment about that country but I can about the state of racism in the UK. The 'men down the pub' spout about pakis and niggers all the time.
It's a dangerous situation when you have a load of uneducated morons spouting a pile of made up crap but you know they have the right to vote.
A lot of base support for the British national party from people like that. Add the BNP's ability to pretend they actually care about people and it's not good.
They tend to support local issues that they know have popular support. A few years ago in my home town it was BNP support for a monument to the miner's strike. I'll put money on it the BNP didn't give a flying shit either way but they knew it would make them look good.
Clever bunch of sods that lot.
