we wont be drinking any Arak though!

Tourists warned after Bali's local drink kills 25

    June 4, 2009 - 12:02PM
Tourists to the Indonesian island of Bali were warned against drinking the local spirit arak, after at least 25 people died in the past week when a batch was cut with methanol.
Bali's police said 25 people, including a British national, an Irish woman, a Dutch man and a American woman, died of alcohol poisoning after drinking arak containing methanol -- a toxic chemical compound often used as an anti-freeze or in paint.
Another 21 local residents have been treated at Bali's main hospital of Sanglah, police said.
Police have arrested the owner and an employee of a small rice wine factory in Denpasar, the capital of Bali, after finding evidence of arak that contained traces of methanol. They are investigating if this was accidental or deliberate.
This contaminated batch of arak was distributed to shops and roadside stalls in four different districts of Bali, police said.
Gde Sugianyar, Bali police spokesman advised Balinese and tourists to avoid unlabelled drinks as a precaution.
"We have been watching and conducting raids across Bali especially arak sellers who sell their liquor from jerry cans. We asked Balinese to stop buying unlabelled arak until we find what exactly caused the deaths," Sugianyar told Reuters.
Arak, a colorless, sugarless drink, is distilled from palm sap or rice and commonly used in religious ceremonies in Bali.
It is also much cheaper than imported alcohol, which is heavily taxed. Arak has a high alcohol content of 20 to 50 per cent, making it the drink of choice for some tourists who use it for cocktails to get a so-called "arak attack."
"Tourists do not need to worry as long as they drink labeled alcohol," Sugianyar said.
Police are investigating whether the contaminated Balinese arak was distributed to neighboring islands in West Nusa Tenggara, causing the death of two foreign tourists there, Sugianyar said.
Police said Dutch national Rene Puper, 23, died on Sunday in a Lombok hospital after his Irish girlfriend, Rachel Maria Craig, 25, died on the resort island of Gili Trawangan a day earlier.
In Bali's Sanur district, American Rose Johnson, 48, formerly of Phoenix, Arizona, died on Monday after drinking adulterated arak, while Briton Alan Colen, 59, who lived in Bali for about six years, died on Saturday after consuming what appeared to be some of the same batch of arak.

    good point.

the Bali 9's AFL refers to the fact we play a modified version of the game, 9 players on a field instead of the usual 18.

3 backs, 3 centre field and 3 forwards.

Also goals can only be kicked from within a 35 metre line (same as the 50 metre line in the regular game)

VFL plus a couple of lost franchises . . . Dr. Jeffrey Edelstein ruined it for me.

I guess it's still better than league!

ok boys, I know you've all been waiting in breathless anticipation. Results.

The tangs started against Singapore, usually a strong side, they were wearing a particularly hideous 'retro' style shirt, pink and white flower power! pics to follow.

    We kicked the first goal,

and then managed to stay in front the whole game, until they kicked a goal just as the final siren went to give them a 4 point win!

Second tangs game was versus Timor Crocodiles, suffice to say we smashed them. I think the final score was about 10 goals to 1.

that placed us as fourth out of 11.

first semi was against a team I forget who, *edit just checked* the Pig and Whistle team from Perth, but we won that easily as well.

Next semi was against the Darwin Waratahs. a strong team, a fit team, a young(ish) complete with support squad of several local massuese and a cheer squad of youngish white girls appropriately named the Waratarts!

    They smashed us.

They also won the final game vs Bali Geckos.

Borneo Bearettes were there again, but I couldnt take too many photos with MrsKW watching me like a Hawk.

It looks like a great location.
Those flower shirts are quite something!.
There seem to be at least 15 of them. Is there a long bench for substitutions?.

It looks like a great location.

It is a lovely location actually. We were allowed to use the swimming pool between games, there was a bar on ground, TV's showing the footy and rugby. Really doesnt get much better than this.

Those flower shirts are quite something!. There seem to be at least 15 of them.

shocking was the word I was thinking of, but I think Rooster wanted it that way to promote his shirt making business....

He's a good guy. famous amoung expats in Aussie rules circles, I think he has lived and played the game in about 58 different countries around world! A legend.

Is there a long bench for substitutions?.

Singapore traditionally always have an enormous bench, didnt help them much though this time. surprisingly. The Tangs only had 3 on the bench, so we had to work that much harder. but also got a lot more footy time in too!

My brother didn't make as he was stuck in Singapore but he tells me the Bears won 2 games. Their first ever win. Those bearettes don't get uglier either. I will get there one year.
