    Cafe Batavia

This 19th century building has been turned into one of Asia's great watering holes. Rarely full to the brim, it combines a relaxed, old-world charm with excellent modern Chinese and western cuisine. A great exhibition of portrait photography can occupy time if watching Jakarta at work, rest and play outside gets too much.

The food was OK, but very pricey. The Chinese menu seemed better value.

Lovely place though - I'd like to go back in the evening one day.

There's quite a few old buildings in the area in various states of repair. Sadly, this really was a flying visit, so I didn't have time to take a good look at everything. We also had to go and stop KW from buying too many gay shirts in the shopping mall.

I was doing 4 pictorials at the same time, so it got a bit confusing. All sorted now.

I ate at the Batavia Cafe the last time I was working in Jakarta. The men's restroom is very unique to say the least as all the urinals have been replaced with mirrored walls.

I didn't go to the loo.

Mrs KW did, but she neglected to take any pics. I think she had a dump as she took about 15 mins

There are quite a few restaurants and bars in restored interesting antique-filled large houses in Bangkok, including Le Dalat Indochine, Mango Tree, Cafe Siam, and Lemon Grass.

Most of them are stupidly priced, especially Indochine, but Mango Tree is reasonable, and Cafe Siam is good for franco-Thai.

Anyway, the guy who owns Cafe Batavia is (or was) an Aussie, long term Indon expat, who owns a chain of language schools. In his own words, he just operates Batavia for a hobby.

Who said there wasn't money in English teaching.
