Crap new alcohol restriction laws - in Jakarta

Jakarta, unlike bangkok, has slightly more restrictive alcohol laws, for instance no 7-11's can sell alcohol.

there is a few duty free shops in town that used to sell to expats, but you needed your passport.

Today i found out that they are only can sell it to you know if you have a diplomatic passport!

I can still get wine and beer at shops, but sadly nothing harder, for the moment! I hope this is a short lived crack down!

It's worse in Canada; you can only buy alcohol, even beer, from licensed, government-controlled outlets or beer stores.

Gawd that's terrible...do you need your passport? - will they duff you up if you're caught drinking outside of designated public? - however do you guys manage!

Yes, they're very strict here; the drinking/smoking age is 19 and you must provide ID. No drinking on the street or anywhere in public, no children allowed in bars that serve food (but children are allowed in restaurants that serve alcohol!) and if I take my students out for a beer, only passports are acceptable and there are NO exceptions!

I used to live in Sumatra. Alcohol is not easy to buy but it is not difficult. You just haven't found the right place yet. There are lots of non-muslim Chinese in Indonesia who drink. Maybe a trip to Chinatown is in order!

I agree - why would anyone in his right mind want to live in such a pit of dross?
