I would love to see pics. Being somewhat of a 'Zoo Freak', I try to visit the zoo wherever I travel. I've never been to Indonesia.

will do mate - but i warn u its one o them old type zoos with small cages and bored animals, nothing like a modern zoo (unfortunately) Steve Irwin woudl have been horrified the croc's were in hemmed in small small enclosures with a little opaque green ponds and a small amount of dirt up against a wall. I'm talking 5 animals in one about 10 metres by 4 metres. (that includes the pond)

empty bottles and other rubbish floating in thr murk.

however they have a huge new primate centre, thats looks like it might be ok - but it was closed so i didnt get to look.

the zoo was a bargin at 4000 rupiah ( about 50 cents US ) and no 2-tier pricing system either mind u explains why the enclosures needed work!

I don't think Thailand does zoos very well. Chiang Mai zoo can be pretty depressing. Most of the animals are stuck in dirty concrete bunkers or small cages with absolutely nothing to keep them amused except schoolkids gawping and stuffing their faces with Lays. The only exception is the panda enclosure - they've got air conditioning, UBC and full room service.

    Here's a couple of snaps.

And this one's from down DD's way:

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

well finally made it back down there.....

LP describes Ragunan zoo as "a nice place to spend a few hours'

they forgot to mention not to go on a national holiday, particularly the end of Ramadan because every good muslim is supposed to spend time with their family and since just about everything is closed the only 2 places in the entire country to go with the family are the zoo and Taman mini (anohter thread and another day!)

though since I ignored a friends warning not to go I dont think I would have listened to the LP either....

traffic was diverted a little to get ot the zoo...

this was about 3 kms along and the hawkers selling shit were walking faster than the car....

another tiger enclosure, at least he's got some trees, notice the fence is not all that high....compared to the one below holding the vicious, savage, deadly Australian kangaroo!

this signs says "you stupid gits, stop throwing rubbish and food at the animals to make them move"

but as you can probably see from the few pics above the Indonesians ability to read their own language is a little lower than mine...
