A mini road trip around Bali. March 2013

A few weeks ago I was in Bali again and decided to hire a car for the first time to do a quick overnight trip to Lovina Beach on the other side of the Island. I've marked the map in yellow to show the route but my paint skills aint flash so best I could manage. We left from Kuta which is at the bottom of the map and drove over the mountain to Lovina which is at the top of the map and returned the next day. The complete trip was 300klm. On the first day it took us 180 klm to reach our destination, we got lost and 180 klm took us 6 hours driving. Must be very careful as being a tourist running over a local could be extremely costly. Anyway Here's the map.

This is my scanky mate. His wife runs a business and they own a house in Bali. We rented this Toyota Avansa for the grand price of $22 per day with a maximum $100 excess if we smashed it. Bloody good deal. Little Suzuki Jimmies could be had for $17 but the Toyota was near new and very comfortable. We originally where going to ride our motor bikes over but had second thoughts when I cracked onto this ride. Good Innit.

First stop was the petrol station as the beast was bone dry. The companies siphon out any excess fuel so you don't get a free kick. Not to worry as petrol in Bali runs in at 45 cents a litre compared to Perth where it is $1.45 per litre. A bone dry tank cost us $17 to fill. Happy days and lets go.

We got about 1 hour out of town heading over the mountain when we got stopped here. One main road running around Bali and a few heading over the mountain. The main ring road carries all the traffic arriving from Java, accidents are common and can completely block the road. We waited our turn and moved on.

Looks like the front suspension had given way and it was game over for this overloaded rig. Bamboo poles stopping it from toppling over whilst the driver just chills out. Be a while before a decent sized tow truck will arrive.

After a while we had left the towns behind and had climbed into the mountains, Came across this well situated local restaurant with a nice view so that was me done.

Great little restaurant and not a tourist in sight. People complain that Bali is over run with tourists but these people usually don't venture too far away from the tourist ghettos. There loss really.

Further on down the road we come across our first rice terraces so pulled over to check them out. The terraces have been built over centuries and are a work of art.

Love these terraces, beautiful sight to see especially when there's no other tourists around. Hence the beauty of having your own wheels.

This was only a small rice terrace as in Bali they cover the whole side of mountains.

Your skanky mate has altogether too many straps on his sandals.

After 5 hours of driving we finally hit the water but where heading away from Lovina, no probs though as we had lunch here turned around and just followed the coast back to our destination. No rush anyway, I had never been here so it was all good to me.

Bloody lovely out here, not a tourist in sight and only a few locals. If I can find places where there are no other tourists I'm a very happy punter.

After backtracking for 45 minutes we hit our destination of lovina beach. This place is mainly inhabited by European families and the few Back Packers traveling through to see the Dolphins. Its not a party town hence you never see mobs of drunken Aussie tossers getting around as one encounters in Kuta. I've been here a few times and its a real nice vibe on this side. Notice the local ladies giving offerings to the road side temple.
