this bloke was over the moon that we tried the local food, thumbs up from lots of the locals for trying.

    market on the street

a lot of this area and the market was on the side of chinatown, was a bit run down and dirty, reminded me of the markets in cambodia.
quite a few local pubs with music blaring that i wanted to go in, one in particular was playing that fast mexican music, and it had swinging wild west doors!!! couldnt get the missus to go in though....

that was the first full day of exploring, an altogether different experience than say cambo or laos, no pushy sales pitches from anyone, which made a change.

got quite a few more pics of the city to go if anyones interested, if not, im going to post them anyway

ok, so heres what we were hunting for, medan has a quite famous 24 durian resturant, that sells just durian, missed the turning by 1 street but found it by the smell

    name made me chuckle

one half was just a pile of durian, which you could pick out yourself, theres an art to getting it right apprently, the lighter coloured ones are sweeter.

we didnt pick any out, just sat in the other half of the building and a guy bought us over a largeish sweet one

and a small, not quite ready one, i prefered the smaller one

the shop will shell the durian for you, and seal it for transportation if required, lots of that going on, the shop shifts 5000 on a good day, ours cost, including 2 sticky rice, about 100 bahts, we only had small ones aswell, do the maths

so medan if you fancy a change for a visa run, was cheap, safe, fun. the people were fine, very mixed culture so very tolerent of outsiders i guess. loved it in medan, if your thinking of trying it out like i did i can recomend a weeknd there, suited me fine, the missus also was quite impressed, although a little on the boring side for her.
