Nov 24, 2009 - 9:29 PM - by Propagator |
I have just started to scan a lot of my old photos and albums to put them on a Slide show CD. Basically to make more room in me cupboards.
So here is the first set, I know some of you enjoy looking at the old photos so here they are.
The whole battalion was posted to Aden early January 1961 and we went there by boat. This was the last voyage of the MS Dunera, a troopship which after its return to the UK was to be converted for school trips
The above photo was nicked from the web. All the photos I took at the time were taken on a small cheap... [Read More]

55 Views | » Oil Changes in Thailand - Synthetic Oil vs Plain Old Oil
Nov 24, 2009 - 7:57 PM - by chitown |
Do you use synthetic oil or just plain old oil for your machine in Thailand?
I am wondering as in the US I was big on always using synthetic oil. I felt it gave an extra 100k to the life of my motor. It seemed there was less wear and tear on the engine and I never had to have any of my motors worked on.
However, I used to have my fleet mechanic change my oil for me. It was cheap as he was already on the clock. Prior to having my business I always changed my own oil.
Here in Thailand it is expensive and I have been quoted 5000 baht for an... [Read More]

65 Views | » sonically or atmospherically funky gogos
Nov 24, 2009 - 4:13 PM - by fugitive |
Hi all -
i am on the look out for gogos that have tolerable music. i am from the states and will expire immediately if i hear any more eagles, dire straits, black eyed piss...yes, i appreciate that the attraction of these establishments is not in fact tasteful tune selection, but for me groovy, funky or just unusual sounds make the primary focus, anthropological investigations of a refined sort, all the more enjoyable. extreme volume and wretched song choices on the other hand drive me away.
over years of unfocused research i have noted a few places that could work at nana: mandarin, rainbow 3 i think, on second floor, maybe rainbow 1 downstairs in the front... [Read More]

460 Views | » Knuckle of pork german style
Nov 24, 2009 - 4:11 AM - by Fabian |
Seems like german knuckle of pork is quite popular in Thailand or at least the kind of dish thai people think would be the german fattening treat. Funny thing is when my wife was in germany for the first time she asked for that kind of food but we had no luck to get it as I am living in northern Germany where other kind of food is popular. (What she had to found out herself because I did not tell her for good reasons is how much colder and rainy it is here than in the south.)
Anyway, having had pork knuckle more often in Thailand than in Germany I decided to show her how it is really done instead of the horrible deep fried "ka moo tord". Actually it has to be grilled... [Read More]

Nov 23, 2009 - 10:57 PM - by filch |
It's been about 8 years since I last went there and I wasn't impressed at all, with Penang that is. I'm staying at Bayview hotel in Georgetown, apparently called an amazingly different name of City Bayview back in an older era. I will post pics and details of my stay there for anyone interested.
Frankly I have no idea what to do while I'm there, apart from have a few beers and try out the local grub.
Any suggestions?

On the return loop it goes along Jalan Transfer, Hutton, Prangin, Pitt, back past the museum then around past the yet to be finished long distance ferry pier & on to the marina.

It starts with this.
Some might be wondering what it is.
It's our multi-culti Santa! It's Asian, or something & I've never seen anything so ridiculous in my life.
They stick it over the entrance to the town hall & the market is put together in front of it. There's a lot of work gone... [Read More]
