The x-rays are no longer delivered by hand, but digitally reproduced. Notice the wire from beforehand. The doctor said "wow, that is the way they use to do." If I was not in so much pain I would have retorted well that is the way we use to jump into trees.

Now they begin to clean the site in order to drain the knee. Please no comments about the patient's underwear. Now I have to admit that I did not personally take these photos. but rest assured, I was there on the scene.

Sucking out the bad guys. I was lucky as there was no blood.

    Suck some more.

And that should be enough for now!

What I have to go through to let you all experience hospitals and Thai medicine!

I had insisted to the old lady that I wanted to talk English to the doc. Luckily, my doctor was trained at John Hopkins University in the states. His English was flawless.

As a final note. We have accident insurance through AIA. The only problem is that one has to report the claim within 24 hours. The doc helped us out by saying my slip occurred today.

Unluckily, for me this aint over yet. Friday, I go back and probably will have arthoscopic surgery. Stay tuned...

In many ways the big hospitals in Bangkok are light years ahead of the U.S. in terms of incorporating IT into modern medicine.

The upcoming MRI will tell the tale. Actually, I am rather aggravated at myself. I have jumped out of plenty of planes, been in 2 wars, shot at by jealous drug gangs, flipped a car or two, laid a bike or two down, well you understand, etc, etc,.

And I hurt my knee badly by slipping on a foking rock.

Bet it felt alot better pulling that excess fluid off the joint. I was really impressed with Bumrungrad when I was there in 2004 getting my wife's medical for her visa.

I think Bumrungrat wrote its own medical records software and now sells it worldwide. I was amazed when I first became a patient there seven or eight years ago and found that all my records were scanned and digitalized and were immediately accessible to any physician. No paper files at all.

Hillbilly, I'd be interested in what you think after the entire experience. My husband needs to have ortho surgery to repair too many years in the infantry, jumping out of airplanes, and running marathons. Now he's fatter, happier, and has bone spurs. Sounds like we could wait until the next visit with our son and daughter-in-law, have the surgery in Bangkok, let him recuperate on vacation, and still be ahead on the U.S. surgical costs.

P.S. Don't be surprised if it's a damaged ACL, Anterior Cruciate Ligament. That's what my knee looked like when I twisted it playing field hockey.

So I went back to the hospital with a knee swollen like a watermelon. Here is where I reported in. My doctor is the one with the white coat...

Then I headed off to have a MRI done. Luckily, I passed most of the rules.

The MRI machine. The technician said it cost about B80 million. The cost for a knee was only B11,000.

Tomorrow the surgery begins. The approximate cost is said to be around B150,000. Hopefully, half of that cost will be for pain pills...

Added as a second thought: Even though I can get by speaking Thai, in these kind of situations I want to converse in my native tongue. So far the people that I have talked to from the docs to the nurses, technicians, office workers can speak English. True, some better than others but at least I can communicate.

It's a bit late now to mention it, but I'd get a second opinion first!

My gf went through the MRI and the doc recommended surgery for 150-200k.
She went for enzyme injections elsewhere instead and her knee is 90% fine now.
My impression is they are rather fast in recommending surgery as a solution at Bumrungrad, - and Thailand in general.
