    Vitamins

    Anyone else here fond of taking a daily vitamin ?

    Anything better than Blackamoors Multi that can be purchased in most Boot's locations.

    taking vitamins in pill form should be unnecessary unless you have a specific problem that needs a specific vitamin supplement

    Our soil has been ruined and depleted of the minerals it once had, The veggies and fruit we eat today have very little nutritional value.

    I take a heaping spoon of super food twice a day mixed with a little bit of fresh oj.

    Call me crazy, I take a multi-vitamin, some Omega-3's, and Vitamins C and D3. I also try to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can. I don't think it hurts to cover one's bases.

    True.

    But even with a "balanced" diet in veggies & fruits and certain meats, a vitamin doesn't hurt.

    Yes, there are those who disavow vitamins, and surely, getting these nutrients from real foods is better than a synthetic pill.

    A balanced diet, plenty of fruit and Centrium Multi. One also has to be careful when taking vitamins, for the most part, the body will eliminate what it doesn't need, but some are possible to overdose on such as vitamin C. Too much vitamin C can lead to kidney stones and other kidney disorders.

    My supplement regimen -

    1 multivitamin with each meal. 500 tabs for $19.95 from the US.

    1 Omega 3 fish oil soft gel with each meal. 375 softgels for $11.95

    2 500 mg + vitamin D/K calcium tablets a day. 600 tablets for $14.95

    2 glucosamine chondroitin a day. 60 capsules for $39.

    5 Vitamin C chewable tablets a day. Can't remember the price.

    I tablespoon of super food two times a day. $40 a container. Contains 12 grasses / grains, 14 fruits, 9 algae / seaweeds, 80 vitamins/minerals, 6 herbs, 9 enzymes, 12 probiotics, and aloe vera.

    2 ginger capsules a day - nit sure 150 baht for a months supply

    2 tablespoons of honey mixed with wheat germ 2 times a day.

    Drink 2 shots of a probiotic mix.
    It does the body good.

    I have been doing Centrum’s (daily) for years.

    I went into a Tops (they have a “Save Drug Center Pharmacy”, inside the store) a while back to get a refill of Centrum’s,..cause there are couple of good looking Thai’s behind the counter. They are always so cheerful,.big shit eaten grins when I come walking up (let me dream). One of them asked me with her beautiful smile,……Centrum Silver’s? (for older people).

    Kinda put a damper on my mood.

    I should mention that I suffer from psoriasis, which is why I take as many Omega-3's as I do (6) a day. It sucks now that I'm back in the US and experiencing my first significantly cold weather in four years. With the sunlight I was getting in LOS and the beach time I put in, I never really had any flare-ups. I think my diet also played into it because I ate far more fruit, fish, and veggies in Thailand. At the same time, however, I drank quite a bit more beer and spirits, and that's supposed to make psoriasis worse.

    Wow, that is a lot. I think it would give me the runs. Have you had any problems with that?

    Nope, no problems. I space them out and take 2 after each meal.

    I used to take pills and take a healthy slug from a bottle of Cod liver oil I kept in the fridge. Now I just do the pills. I was reading somewhere on-line about a study somewhere in Europe, I believe, where people were given 6 Omega-3's a day. Said it helped them with psoriasis. That's why I upped the dosage to 6 a day.

    To throw in my 10 bahts worth, yes, I do take a supplement or two. Why? Because as said the nutrient content of food now is only a fraction of what it used to be due to quality of soil etc and you would have to be eating all day a load of different stuff to aquire everything you really need.

    Secondly, there are vitamin pills and vitamin pills, they are not all the same, for sure. Vitamin pills DO work but there are a couple of conditions that need to be met to ensure you benfit properly from them as the price does add up. Some people cynically say that vitamins are simply pissed out with the water and you waste your money, only half true. Examine the content list on the bottle and view what form the vitamin or mineral is in, the answer to that determines how absorbic it is. For example, the cheap supplements like say Centrum (230 baht for a month) will have "Zinc (Zinc oxide)" on the back or "Magnesium (Magnesium oxide)" and the oxide form of the mineral has a very low absorbic rate, say 5-10%, so even though it says 100% RDA etc it is simply not very absorbic, hence a lot of it gets pissed out, if the supplement uses, say, the suphate or another form of the mineral then it has a much higher absorbic rate by the body, upto 60-70% and then it's a benifit to take. Don't get me wrong, you stil benefit from taking the cheap ones but it is only a little bit, probably un-noticable unless you are suffering from real deficiency, which is uncommon.

    Not surpringly, the cheap vitamin/mineral supplement use the oxide form of most minerals and the expensive ones don't, hence the price differential.

    The other thing that you must realise is that your digestive system/stomach etc needs to be in a reasonable condition and detoxified for the supplements to work at optimen levels, for this I use "Bio C" from Nutrilite, pretty good, 700 baht or so for a 100 pills. Doesn't mean you have to stop drinking etc but you shoud make an effort to clear it out.

    The other rule of thumb is that generally, not always, capsules are better than pills as they take longer to disolve and are more likely to deliver the supplement directly to the intestine.

    I also take phytonutients with the multivitamin/mineral, as a pill, which are concentrated vegetable extracts and anti oxidents. Also take fish oil as well which is a must really as it can help anyone and those that say just eat lots of oily fish instead shoud be aware of the fact that most water today in the world is contaminated, even in very small amounts, with heavy metals such as lead/mercury etc and these do accumilate in the meat of fish, but up to you.

    Those that are worried about cardio-vascular health and a few other things might want to have a look at "Coenzyme q10", often touted as the wonder nutrient, helpful for many things, but again it's not cheap.

    The brand I take of everything is Nutrilite, the multivitamin/mineral is named "Double X", imported from the US, but it is not cheap. I feel a difference and IMO it works well, noticable improvement, just Google it if you want. I am careful of locally made stuff on this level/subject as the supplement industry is unregulated everywhere, even in the west, which was a surprise to me. I am suspectful of the ingredients of Thai sausages that you can buy so definately that extends to this stuff as well.

    Go with what you are comfortable with or what you feel works for you as everyone is different. If you are unsure then always check with your doc as well.

    This is seldom possible. Most soils around the world are depleted of important minerals. So regardless of how good you "think" your food is it's more than likely that it's lacking in many nutrients.

    From the US - I think its called the Herb Doctor or something like that. My friend gets it wholesale and either mails it to me or brings it with him when he comes to Thailand.

    Yes of course. It is much easier to believe that than to accept that problems may be caused by eating the wrong stuff, especially just too much.

    In fact what we eat today is usually much healthier than in the good old days. When I was a child the only available and for us affordable fresh fruit were from the garden of my grandfather. A few weeks of fresh apples and cherries. The apples were stored and usually those already spoiled were eaten. When spring came the rest were dried or rotten.

    Today with modern transport and cool storage potatoes and vegetables are available in good quality most of the year. That's part of why we live much longer today even eating too fat too much.
