billzant Spending a bit of time on Thai Travel forumsbillzant Spending a bit of time on Thai Travel forums
Dear Meepho,

I had suffered with occasional acid reflux for years but had assumed it was stress from work. When I retired I thought it would disappear, but after a year of retirement I started developing the problem more seriously. I attended a natural health clinic and they told me I had GERD and should look into my diet. They told me to follow a fast of fruit and veg for 10 days to detox, and then to stick to a diet of brown rice, beans, veg and fruit - some fish. This is basically a macrobiotic diet.

Within the diet I also balanced out the pH by making my diet more alkaline.

It was drastic at the time but I have followed it for a couple of years now and feel an awful lot better. I would certainly recommend it but it requires determination.

Hope you resolve your problem,

All the Best,

BillZ

thankyou for all the input it has been very informative, and i have plenty to try out,
i have indeed taken the overall advise and seen the doc, he has taken a blood sample and he will be able to break it down to a couple af causes, it will take a few days for the results to come back and i will let you know who has been the closest on their diagnosis.

in the mean time i will try a couple of changes to my diet, i like what billzant had to say and it makes sense and can not do any harm,

once again thx

you need to get checked for the presence of a bacteria in your stomach, its called helicobacter pylorans and if present is simply treated with antibiotics, the test is simple. this bacteria can cause heartburn and bloating and there is a school of thought that implicates long standing infection with helicobacter as a cause of stomach cancer later in life.

long standing acid reflux, causing chronic esophageal lining damage over many years has also been implicated in causing cancer of the oesophagus

if you are over 40 then any indigestion/heartburn should be investigated before embarking on treating the symptoms blindly. a gastroscopy ( a simple procedure where they examine the stomach and esophagus with a camera ) should be done.

chronic heartburn due to a hiatus hernia is usually treated with , among others , omeprazole tablets, cutting down on alcohol, cigarettes and spicy food, not lying down with a full stomach etc. but there are many causes of heartburn, from stomach ulcers to stomach cancer and so you should be certain of the cause before just treating the symptoms, if you just treat the symptoms then the symptoms may disappear but cause will still remain.

go and see a gastro enterologist at a decent hospital and dont piss about with advice from barely qualified chemists, non specialist doctors or posters on internet forums who may not have the full facts.
the blood test is to check for the bacteria [ and i hope it is ], if the test comes back negative for bacteria then the doc say's as you do, i will have to go for a gastrocopy.

in the mean time i have been given 56 omepazole capsules.

are you a doctor?
