    Health Insurance

Have been sick for a couple of days with the old guts so I went to the hospital today (Paolo Memorial). Anyway the Doc said I had cronic gastroenteritis and should remain in for the night on a drip. No problem I thought I'm covered. Anyway the lovely business woman was in asw quick as fuk showing me rooms and a list of prices..2300 for the room, 400 for food (what the fuk am I going to eat when i have gastro), 1500 for nurse care, whatever and whatever for the medicine, Dr and the rest. She said it would come to about 10,000 for the night!!!!Anyway, I thought if you are a day patient or out patient you pay your bill and claim it back from the insurer and if you are admitted, the hospital bills the insurer themselves...not the case. I called the insurer and she said (a Kiwi) that it may take them 2-3 days to sort the paperwork. Now I was'nt going to pay the 10,000, and if I waited for them it could be 3 days at 30,000, all for a fukin' stomach bug - and I still may not have been covered. I gave them there pyjamas back, got the misses to get the meds and drive home.

Result - Jarvis paid 960 baht.

Moral - Don't go to hospitals that think they are the fukin Landmark Hotel and don't give a shit about your health, and check your ****ing school chooses the right medical insurance.

PS - I had to sign a disclaimer that I refused to stay in hospital when advised to do so...the Dr made his patient evaluation on me in 1 min 30 secs.

If you don't here from me later I'm dead by the way

I spent 12 days in BNH last year, including some days in intensive care. Bill was almost a million.

Fuk'n A. Damn near made the missus hit the streets over that one.

I spent 6 days in the Bankok Phuket. Had loads of X-rays, MRI scans, some test where I breathed radio-active gas, lots of drugs and was in my own room. Came to 130,000 Baht. That was three years ago.

I paid it all first, then, the company I was working for at the time re-imbursed me the full amount.

Is this Paolo hospital a chain? We have one down here (the only private hospital) called San Paolo. Extremely expensive and fairly shit service & medical standards (IMO).

Hope you feel better soon, Jarve. Are you taking electrolytes with your fluids? They taste pretty horrible, but help hydrate you far better than just water.

BTW, the disclaimer you had to sign is standard practice anywhere. Just the hospital covering their backs.

I was thinking of getting BUPA insurance. I have a brochure that says you can get insurance for you, the missus and kids for about 14,000 baht for the year and it covers you in any hospital in Thailand.

Any of you guys (or girls NR) have any rants or raves about BUPA??

^ Read what you're covered for very carefully. I was with BUPA for years here. Then I wanted something dental done, so I checked the policy to see whether I was covered. Not only was I not covered for that, but I was only covered between 3% and 25% of anything that might conceivably happen to a woman of my age. Not good. So, make sure you're covered for things that might actually happen to you or family.

    That sounds far too cheap.
I pay about 25,000 Bt a year to AIA for the missus. Major surgery or major illness only.

BUPA (and others) do do a scheme for about that money, but there's a lot of things it doesn't cover (such as women's shit).

I have a feeling at that price, the insurance won't kick in until after the first 100,000 Bt, or, so.
Guess he needs to read the fine print.

You sound very caring. So if she has some minor illnesses you just buy her some parcetamol and tell her to stop whinging?

BUPA isnt too bad from myexperiance, got dangue fever and went to some bullshit goverment hospital first, theclosest when the fever hit 40 degrees, they said i had the flu gave a handfull of vitimin C and told to go home. Went home for about two hours, the mrs's decided enough was enough after i started talking to people who were not there and took me off to a private hospital. after the first blood tests and a call to the other hosipital was told by the doc that i had dangue fever and had to stay in.7 days in and the best treatment one could wish for and didn't pay a cent. That was on the standard BUPA insurance.

No Fabian, everything else we pay cash. The insurance is for major stuff that can put a big dent into the bank account.
Also, medical insurance is just like car insurance, if you use it, the next year it gets more expensive. Paying cash for the minor stuff means that next years insurance will be about the same price.
Instead of leaping in, both feet first with the sarcasm, maybe you should think a bit first.

    weird isn't it.

there doesn't seem to be any sort of no claims bonus with my motorcycles.

doesn't matter if we claim on them.

I have a very bog standard bupa package from work (7,000 odd a year).

it surprisingly covered me for my accident a few years back, also for the night stay in hospital and return visits.

it has yet to be put to the test for more.
